The ecost.com is offering the memory stick 128MB for $29.99 after mail in rebate.
//www.ecost.com/ecost/promotions/detail/490127.asp
Seems like a good deal. Is this site reliable? Any advise will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

I've never used that site.. I'd like to know too.
Although, I recently bought 2 sticks for my Sony Clie :0( Too bad I didn't know about this deal.. (then again, I think they have to be the special white ones, not the purple.....) |

Ahhh, $15 mail-in rebate. So you wait weeeks for your refund. But it is Lexar, a solid name.
Resellerratings.com (link posted be Josh) is in my opinion one of the the best sources of reliable information on e-tailers, and in this case it's kinda marginal. There are other very reliable sellers offering the same item for about $50, and I assume you can still get the rebate.

Costco has the Sandisk 128MB memory stick for $49. I'm not crazy about mail-in rebates, half the time you never hear from them again. |

I have always received my rebates from Costco and Sam's club, I always keep accurate copies of all the rebate items that I submit, they have a toll free telephone number contact if you don't get your rebate. |

I only have the original Sony Memory Stick. I went to costco yesterday and saw the Sandisk 128MB for $49. Is Lexar and Sandisk compatible with FX7? Any image quality difference? |

I have a Lexar Memory Stick and it works fine.

shipping and handling.

Check out this site (for those who are ok with mail order and rebate)
//www.pcmall.com/pcmall/shop/detail.asp?DPNo=490127&adcampaign=email,PWB00122
The review of this site is better than ecost.com.

Memory sticks are memory sticks. (Except for the Magic Gate and new Pro versions) The others make them to Sony's specs under Sony liscenses.
As for pictures, there is no difference. It isn't like film. This is strictly computer memory, 1's & 0's. I've used the Sony and Lexar sticks in my camera with no noticeable difference in performance in any fashion, whether reading/writing or transferring data. |

Now I was told by my local camera shop in this area that the Lexar Memory Stick is actually faster than the sony brand. I am receiving the Lexar 256MB (128x2) on Tuesday and we will see. Yes, I agree that memory is memory (all 1's and 0's), so we will see what is going on. I don't know how fast it will be or how it will work. I will post again later. thanks for the info from everyone in this forum.

I'm interested to see how the speed of the memory stick pro will affect the F717's performance, as far as shot-to-shot times, clearing the burst buffer, tiff storage etc. I'm buying an F717 this week and I'd buy the 256 one instead of regular sticks if the difference is significant. I'm planning on using the camera for, among other things, track and field shots...
James.

I've found the answer to my own query (sorta) with disappointing results. I figured that, with the repetition of the phrase 'take full advantage' when referred to future devices' interaction with the Memory Stick Pro, the F717 and other currently compatible devices don't take full advantage. Sure enough...
From this report from CES 2003
The F717 uses a serial interface as it was explained to us that the development and perhaps availability of a parallel interface at acceptable prices and quantities for new product lines had not been accomplished as of the time the F717 was being completed. However, the F717 did in fact perform faster using the MSPro in our tests compared with current Memory Sticks, a fact that MSPro technicians/reps explained to us was primarily due to the improved technology and component properties used in the new MSPro sticks themselves. Our testing included timing the write speeds of 3 identical burst mode shots using both cards, which we repeated 3 times (so 6 burst mode tests, 3 for both types of Memory Stick). The write times for the regular Memory Stick each came in around 11 seconds, or a little under, and when using the new Memory Stick Pro, the timings were consistently just over 2 seconds faster for identical shots. Based upon what we found, we would rate the speed increase at just over 20%. It was too difficult in the setting of the CES trade show to perform more controlled and precise testing of other potential speed operations, but we are quite confident that the write speed improvements were at the approximate 20% area, a figure a Sony technician stated they had unofficially determined from their own quick tests.
Sony did show several accessory items such as a new mouse and PCMCIA card adaptor which will work with the new MSPro cards, but again it was pointed out to us that these items have serial interfaces so they will not yet be able to take full advantage of the potential speed increase in the new cards.

9 vs. 11 seconds for a burst transfer...not sure that's worth it! |
