so i take one picture, camera works fine, then the next and there is black over half the picture - i take off the lens and open the mirror and see that the shutter is halfway over the sensor ...
i try to take more pictures, but the camera doesnt understand why the shutter is stuck and it displays 'error 99' in the display -
anyway, im thinking about what to do with it - i was afraid of touching anything in there - thanks for any comments or advice ...

What Dave said. Shutter replacement is required. |

this exactly happened to me too with my 300D.
I decided to go for the 30D (I wanted a new camera for a while)

had the same issue with mine. I could turn it off and it would let me do about one or two more then lock up w/error 99. I sent my 300 off and it is pretty slow. I have to send it back. Just afraid to not have a backup. |

what good is a back up if it doesn't work?
