An example from the first Stock Photography Challenge (Feb, 2003):

Entry:

Link to original image (cropped, but before the color manipulation) and a cover mock-up for a fictional trade magazine (frequent users of stock photos) as my image might have been used.
BTW: the basic premise of the story is true (from a radio news report), but all of the details are made up.

This one doesn't come under the funny catagory...but since it was here i thought i'd share.

since i'm the graphic designer for this magazine it kinda takes away from the excitement of getting a photo published on the cover.

Hi everyone,

I would just like to say that I am in awe of the fantastic images that everyone has done re this thread, with the cover of a magazines.
You are all to be "CONGRATULATED"......Top stuff for sure.

I am still new to Photoshop, so have no idea how to do this, except for the actual images to be submitted process, as that is all that I have been taught.

I learned computer graphics re Corel program.
I could import one of my images from my portfolio, and process it in Corel. I could then take it back into photoshop, re the finishing process.

I would love to know how to do this in "Photoshop", if someone is keen to give me the simple steps please.
I would be very grateful, if someone could help me please.

Although I don't have one in the thread...most of these are simple photographs..with background cloned out. Borders are added to some of the mag covers.

Most of the other stuff is "text" layers. Very simple after you master the basics in PS. I also see on some of the text that the "layer" properties may be "shadowed" and some text may be being "skewed" for effect!

You will learn...just try.

I am using Photoshop 7.0.

What I do is just take the image I want to use and click the T in the tools window to add text. That creates a separate text layer (as can be seen in the layers window). There are also the character and paragraph windows. (If they are hidden, you can find them under the window menu option.) Sometimes I've had problems with not having the right layer selected, after I go back to undo something, so I keep the layers window handy so that I can click on whatever I want to edit.

I change the font and size in the text toolbar and to edit the look of the text, I go to the menu option layer, then layer style. I open blending options so I can see all the different options at once.

You can copy your image to clipboard and paste it in corel. you can display it at a low resolution for fast redraw times. You can do all your text etc in Corel, then toss that image, group all the text etc, copy it to clipboard, and paste it into PS on top of the image. I used CorelDraw for graphic design for years.

But even so, generally I'd do this direct in Photoshop for something like this, it's not hard to adapt.

Yes, I like that ... they make a nice pattern, and the typeography works well too.

Now we need someone to play "Candid Camera":

Print out all those wonderful covers, and put them in a busy news-stand somewhere.

Then wait, ready with cameras behind the scenes, to capture the faces of the poor, unsuspecting customers.
