Exactly, that is why I gave my original suggestion, a used D60 or a new 10D and used and or sigma lenses. For starting out I agreed with you that the 75-300 III would be a great lens. Later if you want more a 300mm f/4 might be a nice step up. Someone just suggested a 400mm plus lens and as soon as you start going down that path there are problems. Using two bodies and fast primes is what the pros do. They are making money from this and have budgets for this sort of equipment. I honestly think that the 75-300mm is a wonderful range for field sports on a 10D. With the crop factor that gives you a 120-480mm range. I can̢۪t imagine using more than 480mm equiv. for field sports. If you were to get a 400mm lens that would be equal to a 640mm lens!!! Now that is CLOSE to the action, a little too close IMO. The thing I think would be best to do now would be to go ahead and get a body and the 75-300mm III and keep the CP 5000. Sure you can wait, but how many once in a lifetime shots are you going to miss during that time? How much photography enjoyment are you going to miss out on. That is what you need to decide on. A 10D and a 75-300 gets you in the door. It starts you taking pictures and you should be able to get some very respectable results with good technique with this setup. Multiple 1D̢۪s and 400mm f/2.8̢۪s are not required. They may make the job easier but you can get great shots without them. Look at my flying bee shot. That was taken with a D60 in MF mode for goodness sake! I posted a picture I took of a flying butterfly in the fauna outtakes thread a while back. Someone commented that it must be nice to have the AF speed of the 1D. It is nice, but that picture was taken using a 10D using zone focusing. A 10D with a 75-300 gets you to a great starting point.

Tony, the 1D does 8 FPS and the AF tracking isn̢۪t much different from the 10D at all. You should be able to get great action shots with a 10D with a little practice and you don̢۪t even need fast L primes to do it.

the original poster didnt say he wanted to take "professional sport photos" .. he just wants to take better ones than he can with his limited focal length, slow responding digicam.

*any* DSLR, especially a 10D, with an inexpensive decent zoom, is going to get him results head, shoulders, and torso, above what he already has.

yes, it's fun to fantasize about a dream setup, but go with my relatively cheap recommendations, and you won't be unsatisfied, i'm positive :).

10D is only 3 fps though. Yeah that's right, 8 FPS for 1D, still a huge difference when you're just aiming at an area for a groups of shots and pick out the ones you want later.

That's like telling someone to spend a ton more money on a car, say a Porsche and you can drive just slightly faster than my grandma :)

Define inexpensive decent zoom :) I know a really inexpensive one -- $80 28-90 mm Rebel lens. I'll bet if you hook it up to your 10D you'll get a lot worse results than with your E-10.

The fact is, 75-300 mm lens is going to be soft at the wide aperature, which is already pretty high. That, plus the slow autofocus, will limit what you can do. If you want to track a moving target in FULL frame with the 75-300mm you'll be dissappointed. Tracking an AREA on the field in MANUAL focus, that might work.

Do either of you actually own a 1d? I do, I have also owned a 10D and D60 and E10. I have actually owned the 75-300 III, III USM and IS USM. I own the 300mm f/4L IS, 300mm f/2.8L IS and have had a great deal of experience with these lenses on all three bodies. I got the 1D and D60 when they first came out. The focus tracking and speed isn't much different between the 1D and the 10D. The AF on the 10D is pretty darn fast. What the 1D gives you is more accurate focusing in low light. Yes the 8FPS is nice if you just want to fire off a bunch of shots blindly then go back and pick the best one. People have been getting action shots with MF lenses and no motor drive for years. Sure the 1D makes things easier but it is not required for good action shots. A while back I posted a picture of a cedar waxwing taken with the 75-300mm @ 300mm and f/5.6. The picture is VERY sharp. The 1.6x crop factor takes what is a mediocre lens on a FF camera and turns it into a very decent lens. I am so glad that you guys who can tell me so much about my gear that I had no clue about. What in the world have I been doing all this time with it. Certainly not gaining practical experience! Please ignore all my advice it is total BS, I am just trying to get you to spend your money on some garbage that is no better than your CP 5000. You guys make me tired.
