It's not that... i just spend about an hour or so browsing the photos before I vote or comment on any of them... Then i look at each one closely. I think about it for a few minutes and then try to formulate my comment... I'm not trying to suggest that anyone follow my method.. it's just my preferred method...

ok, i commented on every single pic! and what i noticed about this challenge is that since it was so hard to meet the requirements of the challenge, that esthetics for the most part went out the window, esp in comparison with the last one. like i know for example that my own submission isn't as perfectly clear, exposed, sublimely composed, and trancendently wonderful as I'm capable of, but it was just so danged hard to stop that motion! so i've taken that into account in my ratings and comments, but I wish others would do the same.

But I also was a little baffled by how many people basically submitted a snapshot, as if the stopped motion of their kid or whatever was enough to make an amazing picture.

btw, it took about 2-3 hours spread over several days to rate/comment on the images : )

Snapshots are sometimes the BEST way to display stopped motion. I see a lot of good stop motion shots here that I would classify as snapshots. All photographers don't stage shots and have studio equipment... Everything I do is fairly simple stuff...

when i say snapshots in this case i mean telling your kid or your gf or whatever "just jump up and down right here" (which, btw, *is* staged), without giving any thought to 'is this an interesting looking place to jump up and down?' 'are they wearing something that would look cool jumping up adn down in?' 'is the light angle/direction/color the most esthetically pleasing i could find?'

In other words think beforehand about what the picture is going to look like. you don't need anything other than your camera, your eyes, and your brain ; ) ..

anyway, my whole point was that people are pointing out stuff to me that's obvious, but that i couldnt avoid because it was challenging enough just to get the shot. : )

What's obvious to you may not be obvious to everyone, I'd hate to think people would refrain from commenting because they think it's too 'obvious'. Yes, it might get a little tedious reading a dozen 'out of focus' comments, but it indicates what people feel is important.

As I continue to read comments on the Curves challenge, I also notice that some comments seem to be condescending, or I have interpreted them that way.

my point, again, was: it was hard enough meeting the challenge, w/o people being nitpicky about minor issues. sigh.

to which are you referring? condescending? on the internet? nahh ; ) .. esp not on a site with a huge variation in experience : )

<note the previous note was not intended to be condescending, but was meant in a humourous spirit :P>

I would never post any names with that... wouldn't want to start an argument on that issue.

I just think that constructive criticism can be dealt without sounding arrogant...

Bear in mind that sometimes a comment can be made without knowing that it might sound a certain way. Especially when making comments on a lot of photos. I think the vast majority of the reviewers would never intend to be purposefully sarcastic. So we shoud just accept all of the comments with a grain of salt and move on.
04/18/2002 01:50:41 PM · #38
Sarcasm is ok... I sorta enjoy that one myself ;)

magnetic9999, I hardly find your comments to be of any help, all I got was some bashing of my photo. If you had a suggestion on what I could have done to make it a better picture in your mind, I would be glad to hear it, but not the pointless slamming that I got.

true. but there's Arrogance, and then there's Genuine Knowledge, and sometimes we have to accept that someone else is farther along than we are, and we can learn from them, even if we want to cling to the notion that our picture is the greatest thing since flat panel displays

hm. which photo was yours? i hardly ever 'bash' anyone's pic. i go out of my way to try to be gentle. but in response to people telling me to not just praise, ive been trying to 'keep it a bit more real'. this is always what im afraid of though: that someone's feelings are going to be hurt.

okay. i just looked at your U. skyline pic. i liked it thought it a clever idea, and said so. so whats the prb?
04/18/2002 02:00:40 PM · #43
maybe it's just because you comment on everyone's photo, but I am new and can learn from you because you probably have more experience than me, so maybe a suggestion or two instead of just listing what is wrong with my picture
04/18/2002 02:02:00 PM · #44
i was talking about this weeks entry, the skyline thing sucked, i'll admit it, but now i think i want to actually try to become decent at this.

Magnetic9999, I appreciated the comment you gave to my photo.
04/18/2002 02:29:20 PM · #46
achiral, i dont know which photo this week was yours. there's no way for me to know that. i know which one is shortie's because she came on here to defend its reality. if u send me a priv mesg and tell me which one it is, i'll look again and see if i cant give u more constructive crit than i apparently did.

I honestly don't really care how someone comments on my pictures. I'm sure most people here aren't trying to be mean. People have their own styles. I Don't mind if I get 'it's crap' or 'it sucks' just as long as they give a reason or two as to why it is the most awful thing they have ever seen and now their eyes are probably damaged for life. I don't think it is neccessary to comment on all of the pictures, either. For me, commenting on 20 to 40 percent is sufficient and with everyone doing that we all will have more than enough comments to get a good idea how people feel about our pictures. The breakdown in the ratings will also always give us a pretty good idea how people feel about our pictures.

I echo your thoughts Tim
04/18/2002 03:17:28 PM · #49
Tim also hasn't gotten less than a five rating average on a photo he has submitted, so obviously it wouldn't matter because he is better than a lot of people here at photography. But I would think that there are many amateurs here that don't understand why they should just shrug off this sucks or it's ugly, because I think it can be said that everyone on this site is at least trying to get better. I think we need to keep that in mind when we leave comments.

And by the way I like all of Tim's photos a lot, they are better than anything I could do right now. I just want to be able to learn to do stuff like that.

I tend to comment on about 80-90% of the submissions, usually with what I like about it, and how I feel the photo could be improved. Since I'm definitely a newbie to photography, I can't get too technical, so only spend a few minutes on each image.

However, being a beginner means that I value every comment that I receive, since most people here are more experienced at this than I am, and I want to learn! Also, the more comments I get the better, as there are often common themes in all of them (eg the lighting needs attention, work on the focus) that I can use to improve any subsequent photos.
