Let's play a little game. Maybe we can learn from it.

Your goal is to figure out how I lit this photo. What was my lightsoure(s)? What else can you tell me about the lighting?

If someone gets it right, we can post another image.

Looks like a large softbox or umbrella high and right, a reflector on the left, and fill flash on camera. Close?

one light in the right with a silver reflector on the left

You were right about the fill-flash part and also about the direction of the main light source. But the main light is a different source than the one you described.

OK kirbic, you mostly got it right. The main light source is actually an overcast sky (the largest softbox ever). Sun is high and from the right. :-) Fill flash on camera.

I see a yellowish light, maybe room light? high and to the child's left, rest looks like daylight - a window?

LOL I was too slow :P

Ah, the overcast sky 'splains the light from the left. Thought there was a reflector there!

OK, I'll bite... How'd I light this?

Knowing you this was studio. I think there wa a single borad lightsource (light box) from top left plus a gold reflector to the right.

This was one of my earliest faux studio sets. Left is my office window (north facing) and the rest is surrounded by white cardboard. :)

Looks like one strobe up and to the photographers left. Perhaps almost straight overhead but a little to the photographers left. Then a second light to the photographers right, alot lower than the other one, to provide fill. Might even be a reflector centre front and low for more fill.

Hmm...Too late :) You know I thought originally it might have been a light tent but couldn't account for the strong highlight on the needle :)

Looks like a lightbox to the left or a narrow window.

It was shot indoors at night....I rigged up a cover for my hotlights so I could drape a sheet over them like this...

This was positioned to the models right and I had a white reflector just out of shot to the models left. Actually the hotlight was just out of shot too. I'm surprised she didn't get a suntan from the session :)

Lightbulb from bottom near center of camera.

And yanko that's why we are playing this :-)

Is it one of those lightspheres on your flash?
12/15/2006 12:52:34 AM · #24
White foamcore behind the hand/dollar. Two good sized windows behind the camera with the blinds pulled up. Cloudy day, early afternoon, northern exposure. Overheadlights in my room up full blast. One halogen light from the bottom left pointing up.

This left some shadows around so I put the camera on timer. While holding my right hand in the picture, I tapped the remote release with my left and had ten seconds to grab the other halogen light and hand hold it in a position to cut the rest of the shadows.

The halogens were the weak things that came with my light tent.

Quite a bit of acrobatics. I really need to just buy some decent lighting gear.
