Way to go, Kelly.

I'll do the same for you. :)

This shot has been in my favorites list for some time now. I think you captured a very emotional moment very well, and the poem nails it.

yes and i'm finally back and ready to get back into the swing of things... i have a free study entry and im going to jump on the next few challenges.

i have to run alot of my pictures through neat image though. i was shooting parades in a high ISO and the noise is insane.

i am going to be setting up a file in my portfolio of the shots.

Good to hear - looking forward to the shots! And sometimes noise works. :-)

I am rather happy ... yup ... uh huh ... yup.

ROFL ... Give UP sickdog. You don't have a chance!

Greetmir, you're just entirely too darn excited about this. :-) I'll admit this is one of my favorite challenges in awhile. I don't expect to have any award winning pictures from it, but I am enjoying shooting (then a lot of deleting when I get home) and am really looking forward to voting - well, mostly just seeing everyone's images. If you want a sneak peak on some very well done street photography, check out boysetsfire's portfolio. That young man does some very nice stuff. Also see one of our Yappie winners - sevilduvarci (and leave her some comments while you're there!)

lol! i never give up! i'm going into san francisco for the next few days to get one for street. we've got no end of streets there but street photography is still kind of new to me so we'll see.

i got some damn good shots to apply to free study so i'll be back in it in a minute.

i had to look at Greetmir's portfolio after his comment obviously and have this to say.

you got robbed on your "bad" shot Greetmir. that's awesome.

i think the problem was in assuming that the average voter on DPC plays chess.

the average voter on DPC can't even spell chess.

Actually ... I kind of think AWESOME is a bit too strong a word for that particular photo. I just slammed it together at the last minute.

But, thanks! :)

I guess I should have named it "Black to Move and a $10,000 Bet on the Game! ... then they would have got the "bad" drift maybe a bit more.

i just love to play chess and thats an evil little spot to find yourself in.

i like shots that require more thought than "my! what a wonderful sunset!" those are easy as far as i'm concerned. i like to know that the photographer is thinking while they shoot.

You knockin' my sunset??? ;)

i would never "knock" any of your work deb.

but you have to admit that if someone entered "bad" with a nice sunset (especially from iceland or some part of northern europe), they could have titled it "end of a bad day" and won a ribbon.

I was just teasing you, and you're probably right.

And my literal interpretation of the current challenge:

Bob, it sounds a lot scarier than it actually is. First, you need to get a hand-held air blower from the photo store. They are about $5.00. With my camera (Canon EOS 20-D), you set the menu to 'sensor clean', change the settings to 'manual', open the aperture to 'bulb' and you will then hear a click of the sensor opening. You don't want to touch the inside components with the sensor blower, but you just blow air all over it by squeezing on the hand-held blower multiple times. With my camera, you then need to turn the camera off and it will re-set. You should probably check your manual for Nikon particulars.

I was really scared the first time I did it, so I went to the camera store and watched while they did it. Turned out to be a piece of cake.

Hope this helps!

I couldn't agree more. It seems like DPC has been on a tangent recently. I'd like to see a couple of good old basic challenges.

I was beginning to think I was on an apathy streak.....just no interest in what's up.

I have an idea for the Love challenge, but it's on ethat onmly Team Suck will love.

It's also one of those fleeting moments things that I dunno if I'll even be able to capture.

Street went out the window for me since the snow froze and there are no streets any more, much less activity on and around them.

Quiet_observation: I think your PMs might not be working. I've sent a few your way with no reply.

I've had similar problems with my ISP filtering anything from DPC as spam. I got them to talk and it works again.

Hey all

Yeeha, F&V at 5.2825...slowly but surely inching its way up! Lots of great shots...personally I enjoy the ones where people have patiently carved out tiny sets, figures etc.

Too funny with the key situation, Deb! I'm sure my cat would've been just as *useful* in that situation. And if you really want some schnee I'm sure I can box some up and send it over.

Time to go do some voting!

Decisions, decisions.

Indeed. I'm considering pulling one of my "Where I Live" shots for the free study.

I'm glad you said that.....

Is that considered to be okay, or will the DPC police gripe if they've seen it?

Free Study just means no previous challenge as I understand it.

Even if it's legal, is there any real ethical boundaries I'm trampling?

There are a couple that came out nicer than I had imagined and I'm seriously considering a couple for a selection to enter.

Hey, that's great! I'll have to spend some time exploring it.

As for curves, at the risk of sounding like I think I'm some kind of expert: here's my day 14 shot for Where You Live plus the original and the rather slight curve I used to greatly enhance the contrast.

Whether you like the result or not, it doesn't take much to make large changes.

Though I am by *NO* stretch good at it, I like the curves adjustment better in RAW processing than in regular PS.

This one was super easy to do and I was amused to see your title on the shot when I had just done this a week and a half before and was SO happy with the results of using the curves in RAW.

As for using a shot you've already posted, it's not against the rules by any means, but do hide it in your portfolio, or take it out. There's an option to "hide" if you don't want to lose the comments you already have. Some folks don't like when people do that (ie use a shot they've already posted) but figure there are at least a hundred folks who haven't seen it so it balances out the handful that don't like the practice. I've done it and lots of others have too.

Yeesh...just saw Trees, and read the rules for Minimal...you can't do ANYTHING...why not just call it Straight From the Camera?!

It is essentially straight from the camera, except for resizing and sharpening. I really like these challenges. They truly make you pay attention to your framing of a shot, and all the other pesky details you kinda figure you might be able to fix later with editing. They're a good exercise!

That's true. Gawd knows my frozen little brain could use the work ;-)
