I just wanted to thank the 45 people that commented on my photo. I had a lot of comments hoping it was staged, and not real, and some "poor child" comments. I wanted to explain that this was my first self portrait, and it WAS all set up. I had eye shadow and paint on my face for the black eye. I adjusted color levels to get a real dramatic effect, which in turn cost me the bright spot on the bear and thumb. The focus...that was my fault. It's all auto focus, and I wasn't thinking ahead enough to get farther back from the camera and just crop it to where I wanted to be in the frame. If anyone is interested, I used an equalize effect (which drew said was legal) to get the dramatic feel. Here is the comparison of the photo with and without that effect. Aftermath Before/After
Thanks again for all the comments, and the 31st place. ~Heather~

Yet another situation where I think, purposefully done or not, the out of focus subject actually really adds some interesting aspects to the photo. The subject matter of the photo should leave us feeling disquieted and uncomfortable and the shift in focus adds to that. Also, it seems to me that it makes the photo seem that much more "real" -- take that for what you will.
But I'm just a crank -- what do I know. *grin*

I had gotten at least one other comment saying the same thing, so you're not alone. From this moment on though, I will admire self portraits with more understanding, that's for sure. Some hard stuff! ~Heather~

Ditto to what Pettela said. My mind interperted the soft focus as trimors of fear. Good one Heather. :) |
