You'll be needing a carpenter/interior decorator at exhorbitant Scandinavian prices though. We could set up a caravan in the drive... |

And a concrete finisher, footings, foundation hmmm, and a driveway big enough for all those cars, Stamped, or Exposed aggregate , might take months..

That'd make a pleasant change from the daily hump over the hand :) |

Well - it's been a frustrating, yet enlightening week - but I have made a decision on a camera finally. And if the tax man actually deposits our return when he claims he will, I'll be shooting with a DSLR on MONDAY !!

Have fun! The biggest tip I've read when switching is that you'll really need to sharpen every shot because DSLRs have less default sharpening in-camera, on the assumption that more advanced photogs use them and will want to tweak shots on the computer.
Which one are you buying?
As an aside, I stumbled onto this shot and thought I'd share. Here's a guy who really knows how to laugh at himself!

Yay, Kashi! If the tax man is generous enough, select a good lens - almost, if not more, important than the camera :-) |

I'm going to get the Nikon D50, with the kit lens (18-55mm) and then get a 50mm 1.8 separately as well.
It was a hard choice, but in the end, the camera that not only FELT the best to hold, but was also significantly the cheapest, won out. I had to go with the feel of it mostly - because I will be the main user, and the other camera I was looking at (the XT) was so small it felt really awkward in my hand.

Unfortunately, I have to shoot at LEAST furniture with my A85. I got an idea last night, but not so sure I can pull it off or not. Going to try today.
I have 2 friends who want me to do family portraits for them - no pay in that, but it will be good practice I think.

Hey kashi, now that you'll be a DSLR owner, welcome to world of sensor dust.
You'll be happy with the D50, I love it. Just don't look at my portfolio of how good the pictures can be because you'll think you made the wrong choice.

Kashi, I think you'll be VERY happy with your choice. The kit plus the 50 will make a nice initial combination - you'll eventually want to get something longer but for now, this will be fine. Congratulations! (And thanks for reminding me that I have to do my taxes...) |

yes, I also have d50 with 18-55 and 50 mm 1.4. Idon't like the 18-55 lens at all, I oly use 50 mm - and it's perfect! i realy love it on f1.4:) |

You two, bmartuch and silverfoxx, are perfect examples why the "camera" body really doesn't matter. I almost went the D50 route also, though metered AIS lens support and the fact that I am pretty abusive with my camera swayed me to the D200. Honestly, the perfect camera would have been a digital version of the FM3a or FM10, at least for me.
Nowadays, pretty much shoot exclusively with the 105 AIS and the 35 f2. I am really itching to get a 35 1.4 AIS though, but even on the used market it is $450 which is I can't justify at this time. Occasionally, I use the 20mm prime, but it is too wide for me even on DSLRs.
I'm sure you'll love you new camera Lea.
Also have a good trip, Alans_world.
Congrats on 2nd there Svetlana! |

Does anyone want a fun shopping task ?
I am able to get a Nikon D50 w/ 18-55 lens for $650. I have some budget left over after that for accessories.
So - head to //www.henrys.com - go into the Canadian dollars section, and figure out a way to accessorize me for under $800.
Keep in mind that you are shopping for someone new to DSLR, who will be shooting kids' photos, portraits, some wildlife, and whatever the DPC challenges throw my way.
I already own a tripod.
I do need a memory card.
Come back with your list and tell me what you would get, and why.

Kashi, if you are going to be doing a lot of indoor "candid" type photos, I might recommend a flash such as the SB600.
If you don't want a flash though, you might look into a low light lens, such as the 50mm 1.4 silverfoxx has or the 50mm1.8 which is around $100.
I use my Grad ND filter quite a bit, though I do take a lot of outdoor nature shots.
One product I "highly" recommend is a portable hard drive with memory card slots. I have a 40gig Wolverine model myself for $150, and there are a ton of other manufacturers out there: ion and jobo comes to mind.
It saves alot in memory cards, especially for "vacations". I took it to Europe and dumped my 4 gig card every night, otherwise I probably would have had to buy 7 4 gig cards to do the same job.
A remote cord is also handy, a beanbag, an extra battery, and expodisc (or white balance card) are some other great ideas.
Just some ideas. |

I second the extra battery. Keep it charged and carry it with you. A remote cord can come in very handy, but if you don't get one, you can learn to use the timer. It's a pain, but it works. I don't have an external flash, but I think that's one thing you'd get a lot of use out of if you shoot your kids indoors. Have fun shopping! |

And I second the portable hard drive. I received a 160GB Maxtor drive for Christmas and love it. I now have a place to store all the photos without clogging up my hard drive. |

Thanks to noraneko, kashi, and jaysonmc for the nice comments. Sometimes I just feel my stuff is crap because of my lousy scores.
kashi, if you're really serious about portraits, look at the 60mm MicroNikor. That's the one that librodo uses for most of his portraits. I know it's not cheap but I found one at a pawn shop for $169 and I had to take the film camera it was mounted on. They wouldn't sell just the lens. I got rid of the camera but that was a real reasonable price.
You'll love the D50. |
