Catherine, we could go shoot complete strangers - it's Color Portrait, but not Color STUDIO Portrait - and I believe there's a difference there. Not that I will actually go shoot something, but it's something to think about. |

I am in Grain and I love my shot. I predict 4.6. If I love it, DPC absolutely dispises it. I'll bet that I even get a comment that there is grain in it.
I definitely will NOT do color portrait. I've never done one before besides like noraneko said, it's hard to find models and I can't afford to pay what some of these people pay for models. |

I'm in grain and I also love my photo, which probably means 5.5 or lower, LOL. There seems to be a direct correlation between how much I love my photos and how well they do - and it isn't generally a good correlation.
Deb - maybe we should go shoot photos of complete strangers for color portrait. In my case, I'll just shoot myself in the foot while I'm at it. Just as well go ahead and convert that one to sepia so it would match the ribbon I'd get with it. |

Does anybody feel that you try so hard to make a photo fit into DPC so hard that you end up not liking the shot yourself?
Thats why i left the first time around as i had poor photos & because i did not enjoy what i was doing. When i left and got my self back to enjoying the photos i took and come back stronger scoring because of it.

Pay people? LOL...all my friends and family are starting to run in the other direction when they see me coming with my camera! |

Whether I like or dislike a photograph (mine or someone else's) isn't really related to the dpchallenge score. |

i am not saying like or dislike is relaed to the score, what i mean is you tryhard to make it fit the DPC "way" and you loose focus on your own style and shoot only for DPC challenges

I understand what you mean Darren. Or at least I think I do.
But for me - since I've focused on candids and portraits only - shooting "for the challenge" is forcing me out of my box. I love it, because I am learning SO much.
No, I don't LOVE every photo I take for DPC - but for me, right now, it's worth it to do it anyhow. It's a trade off. Hate the shot, but love the learning.
Or maybe I'm rambling on - I'm not entirely sure.

I'm lazy, I admit it. I just ordered a nice lightbox and fabric swatches for the inside of it online. |

Where do you order something like that? I'm lazy too!
Edit..But I'm also poor!

I couldn't agree more! I spend most of my shooting time on subjects to fit challenges instead of shooting what I like. The things that I like to shoot are pretty hard to shoehorn into most challenges.
I'm really glad they had this challenge for grain. I love using grain but that is a major no-no in DPC. I used it one time and I couldn't tell you how many comments I received about using it. They weren't good comments either.
Of course, Team Suck is always there to make me feel better about my shots.
Edit: I'm on a WPL team but I'll be glad when that's over. I feel like I have to keep up with the challenges for the sake of the team. In the world of Suck, it's not like that. I Love It!

I hope TS members aren't voting high just because they think they spot a teammate's work? I'm assuming you mean you voted high because it has things you like in it, standing well on its own as an entry, that happen to correlate with her photos. But I just want to make sure. |
I hope not too... Firstly because it would be against the rules and could get either person banned or suspended and secondly because if I were to get a high score, I'd want it to be because of my shot, not because I took it. |

Shooting for challenges... for me, it just makes me focus on an idea, kinda. I still shoot what I like to shoot, but I also keep the challenge in mind when I'm out and about. Occasionally I even come up with an idea to try something on purpose instead of stumbling across something. Those don't usually go over very well, though. In those cases, yes, I find maybe I "try too hard" or something like that. For my Time entry, I'd shot something on Saturday, woke up to see the challenge, and went back and reshot the same thing. So it was something I shot for me to start with that fit into the challenge quite nicely (score notwithstanding). I tend to do that more than "set up" shots - something I've shot before ends up being a good fit for a challenge so I go back and try it again. Not sure how much I learn that way, though! :-) |

Yay, I'd like for Circle II to do well, it started at 4.6, it's always nicer to see votes go up instead of down. Now to go read the threads and vote! And am crazy with curiousity to see how Crossdress does!

What, noraneko, you didn't make your lightbox yourself?! ;-) All you need is a big square cardboard box, a utility knife, some white plastic bags, and tape....I use bristol board inside mine...Greetmir, is that how you made yours? Or did you use PVC piping as per other ways of building them? |

I'm on the lazy side (and lack even the most basic tools since I moved) so I, too, would like to know where I could order a light box. |

Darn it, Snaffles, you make it sound so frikkin' easy :-) I'm the antithesis of handy, I'm afriad. My dude is very handy, but not home so often due to our fledgling business. I ordered it from //www.adorama.com. It was about $40 or $50.
Edit to add big congrats to Xianart for the cool photo in the paper. Love it!

I got the idea for making mine off of LuckyOliver, a microstock site, and directions etc. Cardboard box was free, already owned tape and sharp pointy cutting tool, purchased white plastic bags for $2/CDN (.50 US)and loonie (dollar) store for 2 sheets Bristol board.
However...it is not collapsible and I did have to shore up the struts with 18' lengths of dowel. And you can't leave it outside in the rain.
Otherwise it seems to work great, lol! |

I got mine on Ebay for $5. Look for the deals. Mine has 4 color backgrounds, white, black, red & blue. |
