I've done a search on this but couldn̢۪t find what I wanted.

I want to submit a photo to a magazine for the front cover and they require 220mm x 297mm at 300dpi

As I understand it for my camera, a 9mp, I can only get to 221.5mm x 295.3mm So I̢۪m OK with the width but not quite with the height. At the size they require I can only get to 298dpi. I̢۪m guessing that̢۪s close enough to resize if I need to.

My question is that if my 9mp camera only just makes the requirements does that mean that all of the 6-8mp DSLR's couldn̢۪t shoot for covers (or A4 @ 300dpi)?

If they have a problem with uprezing then, no, 6-8 MP cameras couldn't shoot covers for a magazine with that requirement. It all depends on the magazine's policy. For some magazines like Arizona Highways no digital camera is good enough. For celebrity rags it's content over quality.

As you've surmised, you are just about there. All you need to do (assuming the image is already at the target size) is set the DPI to 300, with the "Resample" box checked. The shot will be upsampled very slightly. Best to do this using Photoshop's "Bicubic Smoother" resampling.

298dpi from your camera without resize is more than sufficient for your purposes though I'd highly recommend upscaling it slightly to meet their exact requirements.

With resize I could coax 40 by 50 centimeter (Yes, centimeter) sized gallery quality prints from a 5 megapixel Sony F-717 output image and could probably go bigger. That is more than sufficient for a high quality glossy magazine cover at the size you are talking about. Technology is wonderful. :)

What I like to do in situations where I need that higher resolution is shoot in RAW, then convert it at a higher resolution using Adobe Camera Raw...
