Okay...I have the 15mm 2.8 for my 5D. But I want something that is wide angle without the restriction on where the horizon has to be to avoid the fisheye look.

What do you all suggest?

sigma 12-24

Isn't that where tilt-shifts come in to play?

In my film days, my 24 mm was a great lens for landscapes. I think Canon has a great 24 mm 1.4 that is pricy but looks awesome. Not sure if that is wide enough for you, but you don't have horizon distortion issues and it is super fast

Not sure if you can use this on the 5D, but it coule be worth looking at.

Have been pondering the same thing somewhat. The 24mm L seems a possibility. But for wide angle Canon seems to focus a buyer towards the zoom lenses: 24-70 or 16-35

Thanks everyone...I was looking at the 16-35mm. Are there any other recommendations out there.

I do like the 24mm but because I already have the 15mm...I wanted something with a little bit of leeway.

I'd go with the Canon 24mm 2.8 or even better the 1.8 ... both are well reviewed lenses and should be pretty wide on the 5D. Either one is going to be sharp.

I really really like my 17-40 F4L although not as fast as the 16-35 it was priced a bit less :)

I recommend the Canon 17-40.

Judi,

I just bought the 10-22 Canon, can't say too much about it because I'm not getting it until my birthday in a fortnight, but I took a few 'sample' shots and it's WIDE baby - SO luciously WIDE!

YUM - but then I have a 30D - so it's not the same is it?

The Canon 10-22 and the Sigma 10-20 won't work on the 5D. I'm not sure if the Sigma 12-24 will either.

the Sigma 12-24 is a full frame lens.

As a beginning architectural photographer I purchased this
lens over three years ago to use with the Canon 10D, which
provided a much-needed 20mm view for interiors. It certainly
out-performed the camera itself. I have since upgraded to the
Canon 5D and the combination of these two is incredible. I
rarely pull wider than 18mm for interiors, but the option is
there for cramped spaces. At horizontal level, vertical lines
remain parallel, although room depth becomes greatly
exaggerated since it is the widest non-fisheye lens available.
Treat this lens like a baby, as it has no protective filter ring,
due to the extreme contour of the lens element. If the lens
ever breaks I will replace it with a duplicate. Yes, its that
good. Nice work Sigma!

Problems I encountered with this item:

The aperture has begun to stick (after hundreds of thousands
of captures), but this can happen with any lens.

yes, certainly not an l-series quality lens.

I'd go with that 16-35 if I had a 5D and some money lying around. Just sayin.

on a 5d the 17-40f/4L would be mostly equivalent, and sooo much sharper.

The 17-40 is about $750 and a lot less expensive than the 16-35. I don't think you will find a better wide angle lens for a camera like the 5D.

oh haha i was thinking of the 12-? L series oops
for sure that would be a very well suited lens for the 5D

Another vote for the 24/1.4L. Unless you need to cover more than 73 degrees horizontally, it's a great option.
Optically, it's a damn good lens, and of course f/1.4 speed is a huge plus.

Was the original question asking for a wideangle that would not descend into perspective distortion hell when not held parrallel with the horizon, or am I just hallucinating? Or hallucinating some more.

24mm TSE ?
08/11/2007 06:03:29 PM · #25
Wow...thanks for all the replies. Just to sum it up (and to show that routerguy666 wasn't hallucinating) I already have the

Canon 15mm 2.8

Amazon Pricing (as a comparison example only!!) - $579.95

and I want a wide angle without the hideous distortion when the horizon is not in the recommended spot. From the suggestions here and through PM's....these are the ones that are recommended by other members.

Canon 16-35mm 2.8

Amazon Pricing (as a comparison example only!!) - $1,453.45

Canon 17-40mm 4.0

Amazon Pricing (as a comparison example only!!) - $674.06

Canon 24mm 1.4

Amazon Pricing (as a comparison example only!!) - $1,119.00

Canon 24mm 2.8

Amazon Pricing (as a comparison example only!!) - $289.99

and this one, although there is some discrepancy as to its suitability...

Sigma 10-20mm 4-5.6

Amazon Pricing (as a comparison example only!!) - $465.52
