If asked, I would vote to keep the challenges as open to interpretation as possible, artisty reasons and all.
As for an idea for a possible improvement? Fancy galleries often offer artists the option of explaining their work. Perhaps adding an explaination field would help? |

Wow, interesting, me too. I've got a few comments that would indicate people really liked my photo, and nothing particularly negative. Yet, my score is mediocre. I guess there are a lot of people out there who weren't impressed by my photo for one reason or another, but couldn't or didn't articulate. Oh well. I'm trying to convince myself that these good comments are a better judge than numeric score ;-)[/i]
yeah ... similar thing for me ... I've had some very positive and helpful comments but I haven't seen any negative comments justifying the lower score (compared to my past results)
Anyone else seeing a lower than average or expected vote? Just wondering if any vote tampering has been going on ...
If you are voting any entry down because you think it doesn't fit the challenge, could you please make a comment.
Sorry for the whinge. I am actually very happy with my photo, and I don't really mind the low score, I would just like to know why.

Mine is almost as low as my last two challenges yet I've had some complimentary comments. Yes I have had some critics but they don't make much sense to me. I don't know if it is vote tampering or just that we have some members with higher standards than most of us can meet. I'll be checking everyone else's averages at the end of the contest. |

I, too, have a pretty low score with lots of positive comments. Strange indeed. |

In the last 2 minutes my score went from a 4.90 to 4.86 and only 1 vote was added? Of course no comment was left. |

OK, I've gotten 23 REALLY POSITIVE comments, but my score has gone from 6.85 to 5.90. WTF? |

To add to the general clamour, I've had 18 very positive comments, yet the rating went from 6.x yesterday to nearly 4.x today...

Well, it was 6.12 after about 20, and it's now at 5.13 after 110, which is a huge drop however you look at it. :o(

good morning Drew
there are half a dozen of us so far that have seen a lower than normal score. Are you able to check the voting stats and see whether we are just a bunch of whining, idiotic, pain in the derriere, try-hard photogs ... or are we on to something? :p
thx KE

My score seems consistent so far, in fact it's gone up about .5 and I personally think it is a bit high for my picture.
I just think the pictures are tending to be a bit dull this week, seems to happen with the more technical challenges, people are so focused on meeting the technical aspects that the more asethetic aspects suffer, which isn't too surprising, just shows people are being stretched or learning.

For what it's worth, I wasn't saying that my score was lower than normal (since this is my 2nd challenge I don't have a 'normal') or even lower than I thought it ought to be. I was just expressing that though I appreciate the people who really like it stopping to comment on it, I wish the people who did not like it so much would also give me some feedback.

I didn't think it was 'lower than normal.' I just thought it odd that it was trending steadily downward, even though every comment I've gotten has been glowingly positive. |

Sadly it's those that don't comment, and who likely don't put much thought into voting that really skew the averages.

Grab your pitchforks and take chase! Just Kidding. Is it possible to have a popup for scores that are less than 5 asking the voter to comment? It really would be helpful to know what it is that we are doing wrong. |

This is one reason I wanted a "one vote for favorite" tabulation

David -- there are a number of users (I'd say about 25% or so) each time who vote on less than 20% of the images in the challenge, and a large number of those vote for just one or two. If we use this as reasoning for having a 'one favorite', we run into the problem that these users are just looking at the thumbnails to make that decision.
Who knows ... maybe we can only give superlative-style votes to those who do vote 20%+. Or maybe just to those who vote 100% ...

I think that 20% is rather low. I would like to see everyone vote for all of the pictures, and if they don't, their votes are not counted. Pretty harsh, but for those of us who work hard to get just the right shot, it seems fair.

Yeah, wow, I'm surprised that so many vote for so few of the images. Drew, I seem to recall you saying in some other thread that you toss out the votes from those who do not vote for at least a certain % of the images? Is that true? If not, is it something you guys would consider? Seems to me voting for most or all of the images in a particular challenge should be a prerequisite for your votes actually counting in that challenge.
There is the possibility that some users would create additional profiles and use those to pump up the rating of their own photo.
Just a thought. Thanks!

I'd have to agree with you, but perhaps a 95% cut-off line, rather than 100% (ie all), just to make sure that someone who missed out one or two by accident isn't discounted.

YES -- We ignore all votes < 20% just before the challenge ends. We also ignore voters who vote extremely low -- i.e. 75% 1's or 2's. The latter is usually about 3-4 users per challenge, though we do consistently get one user who votes 85% 1's. Some people just never learn...
Your average on the front page INCLUDES these votes right now. They will not be ignored until just before the challenge ends, so your averages will generally jump up a little at that time. We're working to make this an automated process -- that is, nobody's votes are counted anywhere until they vote for 20%+.
I also think 20% is a low number -- but we're trying to get a balance between throwing out too many votes and being fair to the photographers. 20% seems a good median for this.

Just curious, do these voters get told that their votes are being ignored ? Or are the just deliberatly wasting their time every week ?

I would think this would be pretty easy to do with the right sql query. |
