Some of these tutorials might be useful for this challenge..
Follow the link, then the 'free lessons' option has several guides for product shots on a budget. And yes I know each example has some lighting kit, but the basic principles still apply, even if you don't have extra lighting gear (full disclosure- I've got an external flash gun). You just have to be a bit more inventive, use desk lamps, that sort of thing.

Thanks a million, Gordon. This is very helpful to those of us who are new to photography and need help understanding what to do with the camera once we have it. :)

I'll just jump on the bandwagon and thank Gordon too. :-P. I'm definitely new to this sort of thing. Just came across dpchallenge.com 20 minutes ago, and I have to say, this site rocks. I got myself a Sony Cybershot P20 a couple months ago, and I love taking photographs. (I realize my camera ain't the best suited for detailed work like this, but I figure I might be able to massage some beautiful shots out of it). :-P. Best of luck to you all. .

Enough with the embarassing me!
This link has some of the best photoshop tips and tricks and examples that I've come across. Found it linked on dpreview.com
Note that some of these tips/ tricks are against the rules here, but could certainly help your more general photographic finishing.
Particularly useful for dpchallenge entries are:
Look Unsharp Levels or Curves?
