Hi,
My second post here. I promise to stop counting them out at this one. ;)
Just a curiosity question: why does DPC only accept photos from digicams? This is a "digital photography place", sure, but I can have any film image scanned to digital, so who cares where the image came from? The main reasons to use a digicam over film are convenience and frugality, so you won't find many film images on this site even if they are allowed.
I've noticed that some challenges have editing requirements which specify that the raw image from the camera must be available for reference in order to prove that only minor edits were applied. If that's the requirement for a particular challenge, that's fine, but I find it odd that the "artistic restriction" of abandoning film would be applied to all images submitted.
For some reason this site has stirred my creative juices for photography. That's something, since I only have a few microliters of that mojo left. I've never felt that way while browsing Flickr, photodotnet, etc.. I'm disappointed that if I choose to dust off my old film cameras, the images won't be welcome here. Don't worry, though; I can live with the disappointment. ;)

Dust off the old film cameras and scan them in and post them up.
The only things that have to be done on the digital cameras are the challenges. There's lots of stuff up that not challenge related.

Why only digital cameras? Hmmm..... why doesn't a ballet school teach line dancing and tribal dances, as well?
You're welcome to share your scanned film images with us, you just can't enter them in challenges.
Edited to fine tune the analogy

One reason that only images from digital cameras are accepted in challenges is that the metadata allows us to validate whether the image was in fact taken in the challenge timeframe. A scanned film image could not be validated. |

I'd love to see your film images. I know quite a few folks who still are in love with film. I've considered dusting off a few of my collection and taking them out for a run.

There are a few of my old slide film shots in my portfolio. There is no problem with posting them in your portfolio. As kirbic said, you just can't use them for the challenges. If you have the info, or can remember, it's nice if you post the general time that they were shot along with the images.

I suppose my misunderstanding was reinforced by a lack of film camera bodies in the Equipment listing (I only checked Nikon, though).
Thanks to all for the clarification.

I be surprised if a ballet school didnt teach line dancing and tribal dances at some point, not so one could line dance, but improvised into part of a composition. Creative alliteration, and all that.

The main reason is the validation issue that kirbic mentioned, validation. Also, we require that unaltered originals be available for all challenge entries. The data that is embedded in the image by your camera is what helps to assure us that we're looking at a true original -- with film we'd have no way to know.
In addition, the short time frame for most challenges would make submitting film images prohibitively difficult for most people anyway.
As noted, the digital-only restriction applies only to challenge entries. Your portfolio space is yours to do with as you please (beyond the minimal restrictions of the site Terms of Use), so you're welcome to post digital images, film scans, sketches, cave paintings, or whatever else you like.

Is that some sort of tribal dance outfit?
I'll add my two cents: The reason we don't allow tribal dance on DPC is because when it was allowed in the past, it caused much rain and ruined all the images in the gallery section. But you're welcome to dance at home and submit photos of that. |

I think it falls more along the lines that if they allowed film to be submitted then it would give Art an excuse to sniff some of the chemicals used for development. It's obvious that he's huffed a bit too much already:) |
