No one lens can come close to "doing it all". In one vsit to,say, a national park, you might wish to take ultra-wide-angle landscapes, capture wildlife in the distance, capture an extreme close-up of a plant or insect, etc. All of these tasks are best performed with different lenses. SLRs allow you to switch between lenses that are optimized for an intended use.

It's not "necessary", but I don't like laying on the ground to take a ground level picture, or bringing a ladder to take a picture above the heads of a crowd. With my G2, I can do that. Also, great for candid level shots, where the camera remains around your neck, and you just look down to shoot (like an old twin lens reflex). Finally, I've taken pictures with the camera around my neck while riding my bike. Try that looking through the viewfinder. |

You know the sayimg " poor people buying twice" ,it is true !
If back in December of 2002 I bought SLR would cost me 3000$ and would be fine for next 4-5 years, this way i bought Fuji 3800,Oly 5050 and now the Rebel and bunch of filters, converters and useless crap and cost me a lot more!

Yeah I have to say I like my SLR cameras with the lenses to change! (film expsensive)! I have a special bank saving for that $900 canon rebel now!

Your right soup. It's not necessary. I thought it was sort of a foolish thing that a serious photographer would never use. That was before I got a camera that has one. Now I have a different appreciation of them. It makes impossible shots possible and difficult ones easier.

So if you decide to get an SLR one day, you keep your G2 for those tricky situations. I can't say I'd like to risk using a really expensive camera while riding a bike anyway. It's for these situations that I got my Canon A80.
I can't see myself being able to afford an SLR anytime soon, but I live in hope.
