I started laughing last night at one of the comments I received on my advertising shot.

It continued this morning when I saw the comments I was getting for my "Upside Down" shot. I think my current challenge entry would actually have a chance to win if people would only take the chance to look at the photo and realize just how upside down it really is. But, since I figured this would happen, I'm just laughing at the worst score (so far) I've received by a VERY long shot. I'll take it as a compliment if I come in at the bottom of the heap on this one -- it just means I did what I was trying to do very well.

*grin*

I'm pouting. The only comment I have so far involves the word 'eww'. That's something I absolutely did not expect!!

If you're unhappy with your score on the upside-down challenge, turn the number upside-down. Turn your 1 into a 10, your 2 into a 9, etc.

sorry to be offtopic, but wow, that dancing hindi god on your site is an amazing render! what did you use?

I did some renders, if you wanna check em out, they're here, althought they're primitive by comparison: some 3d graphics. i have more elsewhere if you're interested :P).

I'll take that bet magnetic9999! Mine is sooo bad I should get a 0.3 I didn't do well on Upside Down. It had me stumped from the get go and I couldn't get a handle on it. :(
Okay on to the next challenge!

Thanks :). I've only had that site up for a week or so, I'm sorry that there's nothing there yet, but when I've finished the animation I'm working on at the moment there will be more.

I modeled, textured and rendered that in Blender. Yeah! Free software :). It's such a shame that NaN has been having financial difficulties. It was actually rendered in multiple passes, following the example of the silver bottle top tutorial at www.dvgarage.com. If you want to learn how to make your stuff look really, really good, go there :). It's run by some people from ILM. I composited the renders in the Gimp (more free software).

I'll take that bet 99.

If your photo is SO bad why submit it?

You don't HAVE to submit something every week.

It would save us time from repitiously pressing "1" on the voting bar.

Do they all deserve 1's though?

Nah, but I get his point :)

... and as for photos with lack of creativity doing well, I think that's not true. If by creative, you mean off-the-wall interpretation of the subject, I can certainly see where some cool photos were dinged by people not understanding the interpretation.

But I think the real challenge is to be creative in your execution. That is, learn from the challenge by following the technique or subject-type criteria in the challenge, but push your execution of that as far as you can. That doesn't make sense as much as it does in my head. :)

I know I may just be an idiot but how do I view the comments I've received so far on my upside down submission? I'm new to this site. Someone help me out please?!

Go to your Preferences, tick the box marked 'Current Challenge Statistic', and hit the save button. The link to the comments should then show up on your homepage for the site.

Go into your preferences and you can set it up there to access your comments.

i've gotten 43 votes equalling my lowest scoring ever and absolutely NO comments

...not even a 'boring' or 'you spent too much time on this'
just a big fat nothing...nada...zilch

Dang -- I just broke 4, and based on the comment it's prolly cause somebody got it.... and here I was going for a low score wins kind of mentality... *sigh*

Don't worry Patella, there's still plenty of time. As for me, I've still got a ways to go to break 4.00.
05/13/2002 11:35:10 AM · #19
Gosh, I'm almost feeling pretty good about my 4.11 now. LOL
05/13/2002 11:36:13 AM · #20
Um....make that 4.03 :(

My photo is doing crappy as well.. Doesn't look upside down enough -- concept was cool, but the photo didn't demonstrate it well enough. Would probably get better votes if I just flipped it 180 degrees. That's what I get for waiting til the last minute!

In keeping this thread offtrack--!
Speaking of rendering, i have one picture that i did using Rhino 3Dhere but i couldn't ever get the texture on the bookshelf right. that was fun to do though. i also have a cool castle i did with POV-Ray but don't think i'll use that program again anytime soon! You can do cool stuff with it, but it is really just like an intro to programming or something. right now i am working with Maya, Poser and Pixar--if anyone has anything using any of these I would love to see your work!

Rhino is sweet, but good nurbs modeling is hard. I might be using Rhino for some commercial stuff soon if some things work out for me :).

By Pixar, I'm guessing you mean Renderman? Things like Maya and Renderman are great tools (Poser on the other hand... blech, stay away from it, seriously). The thing is, you can learn them, but you can't use them unless you know the fundamentals. Go to dvgarage.com for modeling and texturing advice, and go to cg-char.com for animation advice. Then you can do great things with whatever software you desire.

If you want to see work done in Maya, just watch Pixar's movies :). I did a certificate course in Animation based around Maya, so I know it pretty well, but I have been using Animation: Master (otherwise known as Hash) for my own stuff. I'm just not into piracy, and Maya's free version is just too lame. As I said before though, I can't show you anything just now, but in a couple of weeks I should have all my stuff available for people to see on my site :)

nurbs IS tough, but with the little i have worked with it, i found it to be very versatile. i think some of the texture problems i ran into was trying to make my own in photoshop, then expecting it to fit what ever frame I had made! especially the clock--holy cow. there are no textures (or weren't then) for digital clocks. making one in photoshop was easy figuring out that it had to be upside down and backwards was not!;)
Thanks for the tips on the sites, I will definitely check them out--my current favorites are 3D Cafe and Renderosity. Bothe of these sites give you everything from tips and tricks to textures and meshes--whatever. I can't wait to see your site!

I'm laughing at one of my comments right now. This person had the nerve to question whether my photo was taken this week and said it didn't reflect being upside down well. Without revealing anything, I will personally email the EXIF data to anyone questioning this and you can ask my subject if he was upside down in the photo. I wonder how many others have had such silly comments.
