I'm after some more memory for my A1. Currently have the 16mb (why do they bother with that?) and 128mb. Currently most of my pictures are taken close to the pc so 50 shots isn't too much of a problem but holidays etc mean I want to have around 2 gig in total. Should I get a microdrive (all my eggs and all that) or build up by getting several 256/512 cards? I heard (somewhere) that the bigger more the memory the slower the file when you are nearing its limit. I have also learnt that cf also run at different speeds - is it noticeably faster and what speed is good?
Thanks (in anticipation).

Thanks for the feedback, 256 was my thought too. 1 a month till July should see me ok for my holidays :) any thoughts on different speeds? and does a card reader transfer faster than the camera?

Well if you actually get 2gig of cf cards and fill them up on a holiday I would recommend spending the cash on a firewire/usb2 card reader. I have 6 256mp cards and I have to say the difference between the firewire reader and a usb reader or the camera is like comparing a dialup modem speed with a cable connection.
In other words I would never go back to a regular reader ever!
And I have never had a problem with the 2 of these that i own. //www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10302882&loc=101&sp=1

Firewire readers are very nice, if you don't have firewire (IEE 1394) then get a USB 2.0 reader (your computer must support USB 2.0). You won't tell the difference, 'cause the cards are nowhere near as fast as either interface.

Are you saying he wont tell the difference between firewire and usb2 or the difference between reading from the camera and one of the higher speed readers?
Because he will definatly see a difference going from reading from the camera to firewire/usb2 in fact a HUGH difference.. It saves me a whole minute per card. (hey i have ADD to me a minute is a lifetime ;-)

Actually if you have a laptop, you can use a PCCard adapter to read the CF cards; these work great and are very inexpensive ($10), compact to carry, and easy to use. |

wow, so many replies to a simple question - must be close to many peoples hearts. I'm a simple UK citizen without a credit card (my choice). Loadsa 256ers & usb2 seems the best choice and will save a little on my excellent battery life :)

Does anybody know the writing speed of the Dimage A1? Is is worth me getting a sandisk Ultra II?
Regular Sandisk 1.2MB Write Speed
Sandisk Ultra 2.8MB Write speed
Sandisk ULTRA II 9 MB Write Speed

Get the fastest card you can because maybe your camera can't use the speed but a firewire reader can download to your computer at the higher speeds. So don't think narrow mindedly and say don't waist your money on fast cards. They ARE very nice to have to make downloads fast. |

Right, so the ultra II with cardreader is the way to go? I guess its worth an extra £10 and beats twiddling my thumbs waiting for the download.

Look for Transcend CompactFlash cards. They're generally faster and cheaper than Sandisk Ultra II. |

Over here in the UK cards are much more expensive so will probably resort to ebay. 256mb Ultra II £37.49 + p&p. Basic 256mb cf cards are about £60. Not heard of Transcend, thanks for the tip.

I have a 1GB SanDisk Extreme CompactFlash card, which supposedly has the same read and write speeds as the SanDisk Ultra II card. I also have a SanDisk ImageMate card reader. They both work great and are easy to use. They̢۪re fast enough for me, but I̢۪ve never used any of the others so I have nothing to compare it to. However, I did read a few reviews where people said that there isn̢۪t really that much of an increase in speed with the faster, more expensive cards. They suggested buying for capacity and low price rather than speed. Anyway, that̢۪s my two cents.
