I

Really disappointed with a 4.8 result for this photo, quite offensive
08/03/2011 03:29:54 AM · #2
Underrated, really?

The score may be lower than you think it deserves, but it has nothing to do with offensive.

YOU give out an average of 4.3 - so that is what the average standard of DPC is in your opinion.

This photo came in at 4.8 - half a point higher than your average, you should be very proud.

I could list a number of things I didn't like about this shot, but someone else had already tried that and you only got upset about it, so I won't even go there.

Edited to add a word I had left out *sigh*... that preview just doesn't work for me LOL

Left a comment.

If you enjoyed the photo, great. Enjoy what you do.
Many of the photos that mean the most to me would never score well here, and that's okay. I think it's important to come to that realization- that this is true, and that it is okay.
But remember, the connection you feel to the photo, that you felt while taking it, is absent for the viewer who doesn't know you, or the scene, or the woman, or that particular beach. What they do know is what you convey to them through the photo. Consider your photo for what goes unsaid in it, because while many things within the shot speak to you, they are often silent to the unacquainted viewer.

Happens to us all Daniele. Don't be disheartened. There's an old saying, you can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time. I didn't vote, but for me it's a 6. The comment by dbosse seemed to sum it up. If you cropped out the sunbather and added some fill light I think it would have done better, it looks like a snapshot. Your other photos are great, keep at it :-).

Bill.

Your photo sort of reminds me of my entry (in the other challenge). Mine scored even worse than yours did. I knew I was taking a gamble when I entered it, and wish I'd entered the out-take instead.

Beetle makes a fair point here, Daniele. Since this isn't the first time you've complained about your score, which was again higher than the average score you hand out, I'd be interested in your response.

should have taken a picture of a wine glass and called it "taste me" if you wanted to score higher.

How can you say that your image is underrrated? You can show your idea about it but the judges are the voters. Your image is nothing but a snapshot, a nice pic taken on vacation, but surely not a ribbon winner. Maybe you could deserve a 5, 5.2, but surely not more than that.

To tell the truth is very sad reading something like this:

Probably u have never been on a beach and that is giving u the sense of the deep. Again, women face is nit the subject, the subject is the foot and the title is very clear. Idea is brilliant composition is nice light was very strong, if u r off its because of your envy

First, when you give an average score of 4.3 I feel you lost any claim of being victimized by underrated images.
Second, I know some people have weird fetishes about feet, they see them as some amazing sexy things.
I do not have this fetish, I see them as feet. Usually smelly feet. So I see this image as some woman
sticking her potentially stinky foot into my face, she is not presenting the bottom of her foot for tickling,
she seems to presenting her toes for sniffing. Ugh. I would have given you a 4 at best if I voted on this, and I
am a pretty kind voter.
Some times it best to just hear our own opinions, you say the idea is "brilliant" composition is "nice" and if we disagree we are somehow
wrong and off? Listen to your heart, who knows, maybe this is as good as you get. In a year, look back at it and your comments,
I wonder if you will see it differently then. BTW my Pastels II image is a fantastic location, an incredible subject, flawless in lighting,
composed as if an angel came down from heaven and aimed my camera herself, and yet these blind fools have given me a 5.05 so far.
So I agree with you, this site has too many blind members who give out low votes, check out the averages given, spot the mean ones.

I'm not sure I enjoy all the torches pursuing those who don't throw 10's around willy nilly. There's no connection between how one votes and the relative vote they deserve. This is intended to be a learning area, one doesn't "earn" high votes by padding their own ratings.
Vote honest (be it high, be it low). Nobody should let peer pressure dictate their vote, nor should people create said pressure one way or the otehr. Receive and give criticism with dignity and poise. We're here to learn, let's foster that environment...

I would have rated mine as 6 because what I shot it was what i was imaging to transmit to the people. I could have worked better on the crop and the colour balance, but to me it's a nice one. focus on the foot, that was my intention. Then my average rated of 4.3 it's the result of many photos I saw and judged consequently. harsh lights, missed focus and many other mistakes (worst then mine on other photos). As there is the freedom to receive a 4.8 average vote, there is also the freedom to complain. Having say that, I take many inspiration and I always read with attention description and technich of many of the best photos in order to try to improve day by day.

There is a lot of anger in your post. We often cannot see our own entries the way others see them, which is why many of us value the critical comments so much. I often go back to my past entries that at the time, I thought would be 6+ for sure, but a couple of years later I find I see them with a different eye. As has been said, eye candy tends to rule the mass appeal scale.

You also need to learn to interpret the voting stats, and by that I mean not only the average, but the vote distribution, comments, and commenter's average as well. For example, my current entry in the FS will be doing well to pull a mediocre average, but it is getting good comments, only mild critiques and has gotten one fave from someone I respect. I know I nailed what I wanted with it, but I also knew when I entered it that it would not connect with everyone. There are many people here who enter what they like, knowing it will have a limited fan base.

FWIW, I did not get around to voting your entry, but it would have gotten a 5 from me. Looks like a creative and decent vacation snap, but it doesn't wow me. I am also a generous voter, with a 6+ average cast, for whatever that's worth. I agree with the others that with an average cast in the low 4's, you have established your own yardstick for what the average DPC entry is worth, so you should be pleased with this performance.

Incredible picture !! exceedingly bright. To say that the composition is nice is not even fair. The use of negative space (left side) is something you don't frequently see. Very 'strong' light, particularly to the tips of the first two toes. I don't think one could score the quality of this photo fairly using a scale that only spans from 0 to 10.

It deserved what it got, for a snapshot. Now don't tell me this was a planned shot that took you hours of setting up; is that why you're offended?

I find that for each photo I enter, some voters underrate it and other voters overrate it. I just can't figure these voters out.

Life is short, we will all be dead soon so why waste a precious moment worrying about how someone rated your photo, don't let your ego rob you of just simply enjoying what you do, taking photos.

I have been throwing photos on this site steadily for a while now, and one of the things that I can't get over is how some of these people can take a beautiful shot like this one and just ignore or "low vote" it. How can you NOT give this photo an 8 or a 9? I am sick and tired of DPC people justifying low votes on photos like this one. Then they like to do stupid things, like indicate because the submitter's average vote cast is low that his score is relative to this. Why would you say such a thing? Apparently he is a very discriminating viewer of photography, and thus it gives his post even more merit than if he were just handing out 10's on a regular basis. Envy is just pouring out over this post and the original photo comments by jealous naysayers who couldn't capture a beautiful foot photo at the beach if their lives depended on it. It's just sad, and it makes me die a little bit inside.

Beetle's argument is illogical. One's voting average has absolutely nothing to do with how well or how poorly their own entry will score. By your logic everyone's scores should equal their voting averages, which of course doesn't happen. It sounds like you two think his work isn't very good, but don't want to come out and say it. If that's the case then maybe offering up your own critiques would be a more beneficial than to continue promoting an illogical argument that keeps popping up from time to time.
