Thoughts?
Google acquires Nik Software
ETA. What irks me is some of the headlines/reports read "Google acquires Instagram rival Niksoftware" Seems the Snapseed app is the thing they are best known for now, not the excellent real photography tools. Sigh.

wow... kind of bizarre...
My hope is that it becomes more affordable, then. The price is quite steep. However, well worth it, imo. Awesome pieces of software!

Oh dear - pretty much 100% of my images are processed with Nik plugins. I really hope future versions of OSX won't become incompatible with Nik stuff. Google won't support the Pro apps.
Bought to bury I suspect, push the mobile customer base to Instamatic to advertise the arse off them. The Pro products will die. |

I was going to pick up the bundle tonight.
Do I rethink things or simply make the plunge? Really love Silver Efex Pro, trial is up in three days, and don't know of anything comparable for the price.

| I don't know why NOT to get it... If they stop developing, well then this stuff will keep right on working, and it's absolutely first-rate already... I do worry what's going to happen long-term, but on the plus side maybe they'll stop coming up with "must-haves" and I can save some money :-) |

I was completely in love with silver efex
and then I got color efex...
When I first tried color efex, I wasn't that impressed. But I absolutely love it and use it basically on everything I edit. I use silver efex on 80% of the things I edit.
You'll find that silver efex is wonderful for color images (layers on different blend modes)
and color efex is awesome on b&w images
Oh the things you can do...
I also have viveza, but I only use that on a rare occasion, now.

I love their software and I have found their customer support to be top notch too- maybe not much longer... |

Quick question while all the Nik experts are listening. I was planning on purchasing one or more of the Nik Efex plugins. I can pick up the Lightroom bundle cheaper than the Photoshop one. I use both Photoshop and Lightroom, though Lightroom mainly for importing and cataloging my photos. Is there any advantage of having the Photoshop version over the Lightroom version apart from ease of workflow?

I'd say it's really a matter of work flow Paul. After starting first with Silver Efex in the Photoshop version I went straight to the same in the full suite. My preference is to take images about as far as they can go in Lightroom and then Photoshop before considering effect filters. So having the PS version is much more convenient for me and I am guessing it would be for you if LR is more of an importer/organizer in your work flow. I took a night class and qualified for the academic version PS suite for a similar price to what the LR version would cost, you might want to take a class yourself :) |

ooooh... that reminds me -- I've never taken any of the webinars offered by Nik. Has anyone ever done those? I should probably learn the software someday. I use it all the time, but I'm sure I'm missing things. :)

Well, I'll fine out tomorrow. I just registered for "Creating Dramatic and Moody Portraits using Silver Efex Pro 2" tomorrow at 1:00pm. :)

Well, that was an acquisition I would never have predicted, LOL! I guess in retrospect though it does make sense if they wanted an instagram competitor.
It could well be that they might spin out the plug-in development part as a separate company.
No skin off my behind in any case, I probalby am just to old-school but I never saw the beauty of their products. I prefer to do it all with the basic Ps tools. I don't think I have a single 3rd-party plug-in installed in my CS6 installation. I might have had a couple freebies installed in CS4.

| I've wanted to use Nik plug-ins for ages but they weren't compatible with my system. Now that a new Windows machine is in the mail I was looking forward to testing them out. I certainly still will, but it would be nice if Google would leave the plug-in division to themselves. |

Google will now have even more information about your purchase habits.
Acclaimed Nik snapseed currently only for iphone, will undoubtedly be released for android. |

Thanks for posting, I hadn't heard this yet.
If Google only wanted Snapseed, I suspect they would have bought it and left the rest alone. So I would not be expecting Google to continue developing the Pro plug-ins, but who knows really! Maybe you'll be able to search effects in the future...

The software is up to date. No complaints or problems here. I just upgraded to HDR Efex Pro 2 for a nominal fee. And, there were free upgrades to Silver Efex Pro 2, Viveza 2, Dfine2 and Color Efex Pro 4. So far, I don't see a negative impact on NikSoftware due to new ownership. The software is exceptionally functional and useful, as is. I have no problem with Google. Maybe Google acquired NikSoftware before Apple could do same.

I think Apple could acquire Google if they wanted (!). In fact, Apple has enough money to acquire Washington DC at the rate each is going.

| I went to purchase Nik's complete bundle last night and something went wrong. Got a speedy email that the issue should be resolved in the next 3-6 business days. When you're entire product is mainly attained via the net, that's simply unacceptable. |
