I pulled the trigger and got myself a Canon 6D kit with the 24-105 F4 L and the Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM.
I got a deal at (equiv) USD2,560 for the kit with some goodies included 2 X Kingmax 16G class 10 SDHC cards, 2X SIDO batteries(they do show the battery level), screen protector and a Canon baggy.
The 40 mm was USD203.
For an extra USD135 I purchased a 2 years extended warranty + 1 from manufacturer = 3 years - shutter included in the policy.
Man, I have to say that I really like it...
It's light, feels good in my and my daughter's hands, the controls seem OK as layout coming from 40D.
The combo with the 40 mm seems very compact and portable.
The wifi is fun and I could see couple of neat applications to include street shots and weird location / angles - no need for the articulated screen (still have to see how much juice draws from the battery)
I am playing and I hope I have time to take it out for some tests.
Oh, I inly have the LR3 so no RAW so I will stick to JPG till I decide what to do.
My girls were tired so the cat had to pose...

Sorry for the ramble I needed to share

Nice quality. How have you set in-camera denoise?
And really, no RAW in LR3? I'm thinking of getting a 6D, too, but don't want to upgrade LR (again), if it's not necessary. |

Since Adobe does not continue to release new ACR versions for old versions of Lr, there will never be support for cameras released after the release of Lr 4. But seriously, you *do* want to upgrade to Lr 4. I used Lr 3.6 until recently on my old work laptop because I had to (it ran 32-bit WinXP which Lr 4.X does not support). That was painful! Lr 4.X is well worth the upgrade, IMO, just for the updated ACR engine.

Congrats on the new hardware! I think you will be greatly pleased with the quality of the results. One thing I did right out of the box was to turn off all of the in-camera NR. I'd much rather do NR as required during RAW conversion. The camera has, by default, high-ISO NR enabled. I'm not entirely sure if this affects the RAW files or only the JPEGs, but I suspect both.
The noise profile of the 6D is so manageable that it's not hard to get really good results up to and including ISO 12800. The noise that's present is very fine-grained, and there is *no* banding that I've been able to detect.

I had some second thoughts about the 40 mm 2.8 until I mounted again the 50 1.8. The motor is horrible in the old one and it hunts badly. It's very portable.

Subject at 9 o'clock, camera hip level 40 mm facing subject. Gets weird to adjust the angles on the iPhone. Shot, upload to iPhone, uploaded to DPC. No idea how it looks on a pc screen.

Some real life ISO.
All shot in JPG as my LR3.6 does not see RAW. All settings normal, all noise reduction off.

This was stunning. I could barely see. It focused spot on in the dark, albeit the middle point. Focus an recomposed.

This thread is going to need to stop, or else I'm going to have $2000 less in my bank account very soon. Getting focus lock on those conditions is incredible, and the ISO is so amazing it almost seams fake. |

Hmmm, it seems I'm going to have to "liberate" our corporate 6D for the weekend again soon, LOL.
