I still think "Fine Arts" is a bad name for this challenge. "Contemporary Art Photography" seems more to the intended theme. |

"Fine Arts" is an arbitrary term used to distinguish a category of work from the "applied" and "decorative" arts. That's about all it means :-) |

Because of the arbitrary nature of the term, I really think that last time around it might just as well have been regarded as a free study. In which case, what's the point? |

That doesn't look anything like the Top 10 of a Free Study. |

could be a more specific sub category in "fine arts" its such a broad term...... I haven't entered for a while as my pottery and garden call me every morning and when I check in to DPC I'm waiting for a challenge topic that will grab me.... FINE ART makes me feel like I have to conquer the Metropolitan Museum in one day searching for what "I" think is fine....art...ug...where's the cafeteria.....SUB BASEMENT WHAT??????...I am pretty sure I can make ANYTHING into Fine Art.....
Someone throw out something a little moremmmmmm specific .....pertaining to the Fine Arts..... please...... I LOVE to see and compare the work done when the topic is narrower....
or at least educational..... "lighting like Caravaggio" or "colors like Rothko" or "design like Warhol" even.... |

Qiki -- I agree that it sounds like it ought to be a lot like a Free Study, but Don makes an excellent point. The top ten of the last Fine Arts challenge looked nothing like the to ten of any Free Study.
LoVi -- I know exactly what you are saying. I am much more comfortable with a more specific theme. It gives me some idea where to start. However, I think think the more arbitrary nature of a Fine Arts theme will help push people in new directions. It will get you out of your comfort zone. Hopefully, it will get everyone to experiment a bit more and make bolder choices. I generally like challenges that provide more direction, but in the case of Fine Art I think it's best to let everyone bring their own interpretation and then see a what wonderful variety of images come out of it.
Come on. Let's be adventurous and give it a try. |

It's a broad brush topic, so you can concentrate on any sub topic you want....renaissance light, abstract, impressionistic, gothic, new age, garbage, noir.... Good idea Anita, I'm in. |

I requested a subject/title change to "Fine Arts: Exhibit 3"
Hopefully that'll help this get picked up. Hope you don't mind Anita. |
