Everybody likes a test, right?
this one will tell you where you stand in how many English words you know.
Test Your Vocabulary.
Would I post this if my score was a low one?
Nope.

Ha! I wonder how many of us could score that well if the test was in
French, Dutch, German, or perhaps Walloon, there in Belgium!
Not bad, Nadine_Vb. Not bad.

That's very good -- about twice the average for non-native English speakers. I'm a little dubious about it -- there were a bunch of really obscure words which I think skew the results toward the low side.

Normally I'm quite good in obscure words, but it didn't help me this time :-)

ETA: I *might* be able to score 2000 on a German test ... :-)

Ja, ich spreche kleine English ...

Alice is wordier than I. This comes as no surprise to me ;-)

ETA: This is an interesting page, especially this:

Now, remember that these percentiles are not for the population as a whole, but rather just those who have taken the test online. Comparing with self-reported SAT scores from previous analysis, overall participation is in roughly the 98th percentile of the American population as a whole — it is apparently a very "elite" group of people who spend their time taking vocabulary tests on the Internet!

I can't remember which SAT score came first, English or Math?

Low man on the English totem so far...

(bugged the heck out of me -- a number of words that I knew I knew... but couldn't really place. Bunch of words that were quite intriguing. :)

Walloon would be a disaster for me as well.
My boss is from Charleroi, in the Walloon part of Belgium, and when he starts his little "patois" on me I'm lost.

I'd really want to try something similar in Italian...

Not to bad? Not bad at all I would say.
We know about the half of the words known by native speakers while, following their information - quote "foreign learners of English, we've found that the most common vocabulary size is from 2,500–9,000 words."
(Didn't notice this part when I completed my "test" but GeneralE pointed it out)

Italian? The very lyrical language of Umberto Tozzi and Andrea Bocelli to me, but I don't speak a word Italian

German? Since German and Dutch are related, I understand the main stream of a conversation, I know some words (I guess just enough for not getting lost or die from starvation in Germany) but having a whole conversation with someone in German? No, not at all.

I think "Wo ist die toilette?" is the only really essential phrase ... ;-)

LOL, seems indeed one of the most important phrases

34,500. didn't know that whole last column.
07/15/2013 05:55:45 PM · #22
27,700 - I was hard on myself and left out words where I wasn't sure of the exact definition.

29,500

You're right. I gave up Maths when they tried to teach me three-dimensional trigonomics, or whatever it was.
Actually, I mis-remembered the original post as 35 thousand + something.

what a bear scores in the words

I guess it's good?
