Not really a rant...but did any one else have a lot of trouble with this topic?
I had a bunch of trouble trying to find someone to be my subject. I thought of doing self-portrait, but I figured since I''''d done that last week I''d try something else. Spent the weekend with my family, took tons of shots and got some nice pictures of my relatives, but nothing that seemed like it would be interesting to anyone else. Of course, the shot I ended up with, while it does most definitely have a live person in it, isn''t people-y enough. And just glancing through the submissions, I''''m thinking, "man, why couldn''t I have done that?"
On the brighter side, I already have some shots for this next challenge. I love black and white.

I HATE taking pictures of People. I ended up with my picture because a friend requested it.

I'm a bit confused. There are photos posted of many people and of individual persons. Are they not all under the category of "people"? Why is it then that the comments I am getting is: Where are the people in your photograph, and such other similar comments. Arnit just posted several examples of people shots. Some of them have just one person. Are voters expanding the images, or merely voting on the reduced sized thumbnails? Excuse me if I sound a bit cross. One person gave me great technical advise to improve my photo. That's what I am looking for on this site. In fact, I followed up on that advice and tried a similar shot again today. I know I can generate better quality pictures if A) I have the time, which this week I did not, and more importantly B) I got some constructive comments. Now I'm beginning to really rant. Sorry. Not all stemming from this, my mood has just been hightened by it.

gosh, i really hope no one is voting on just the thumbnail. that would be heinous! i know that you can change your vote on the thumb but can you do your initial vote upon it? I can''t check because i already voted on all of them - it was 2 am, i had a big bag of fig newtons on hand, and i got on a roll what can i say? : )

Sorry. I was probably just sounding crazed. It just amazes me how the comments can come out of nowhere. |

everybody reading this who is a photographer who submitted a picture, do this with me now:
take a deep cleansing breath
let it out ...
again ...
ahhh. . .
now say to yourself: "i have opened my art to people from every walk of life and state of mental capacity and emotional stability. I will not take anything that I read personally." :) :) :) |

That's the way it seems to go sometimes Karen. I did not submit this week because I knew I could not begin to compete with all the semi- professionals and the people that love to tear down everyone else's photos. This site started out being fun but I seem to get more discouraged every challenge. I may or may not submit next time, but so far I keep looking at my B&W photos and I haven't seen anything that might keep me out of the "boring" category that I usually end up in. |

Well. Okay. You perked me up. Guess I was just hoping to get some insight on how to make a shot like that work... if there is a way...
People are fun to photograph. I especially like the reactions of families when they are given a great photo that help keep their memories alive. I do newborn photos at a local hospital part-time, and have done weddings, communions, and portraits. It's the magic in their eyes that counts the most when they view their pictures.

Yes. I have been trying to squelch those feelings too. At the risk of repeating myself... I was excited about this so that I could learn. I guess if I get one or two constructive comments out of 20-30 I can take those and run.

I kind of see it that way. I guess I just got used to critiques in art school. But I understand that doesn't make it any easier. Most of the truly helpful comments I get are great and I've learned from this...and I honestly appreciate them.
As for the others....the ones that say " no " and " why?" and "boring" or "seen it done better", or some other one word dribble only meant to demean anything you feel you've accomplished, I feel that these people's comments are a direct reflection of their personality in most cases and that no matter what you did....they wouldn't like it. (Which is pretty much what everyone has said)
When I comment on someone's picture it's because I truly like it and have something to say about liking it. Maybe it's just me but I haven't had the courage yet to really say what I'd like to see done differently because, quite frankly....I'm an amateur at this and don't feel qualified to do so. As for the photographers who do, I have come to respect their opinions from seeing their works here. There are some really talented people here.
That said, you can sort of weed out the "constructive" criticism from the "destructive" criticism....you get a feel for who's making comments to really help and those who make comments just to trash you. Keep on trying and don't give up....I got a really low score last week but it just made me want to try harder for this week. If it's something you like and that you feel is good work....then don't be afraid to put it out there no matter what...you never know. I was a little wary of putting my work out there this week simply because it was "cliche"...but it's doing well so far. So see? You never know.
Well..that's just my opinion and I usually don't say much in here....but I hate to see people get discouraged when it comes to their art. It's a personal thing and not everyone likes the same things....so don't give up.
:) Thanks, Karen J |

This is very good advice. Sometimes I wonder why I bother with this site. It's more than people being hard, they're mean. They say a lot of mean and unnecessary things. If you don't like it okay, tell me why and what I can do to make it better. Don't rip my heart out. The biggest problem that I have is that these people think that they are experts.Originally posted by magnetic9999: everybody reading this who is a photographer who submitted a picture, do this with me now:

Thanks, Karen J. I appreciate your reply. I now feel encouraged, and will try to not feel restrained by "what if they say __ about it" echoes in my self/sub-conscious! :-)

I also appreciate the encouraging words. More than anything, I believe most people on this site want to help each other in any way they know how. There are some that seem to get a kick out of doing anything they can to get under someone else's skin. It's bad to have to deal with that element when I visit this site to unwind and have fun.
I would have tried harder to get a photo for the people challenge but that is an aspect of photography that I feel very intimidated by other's successes. That is something I plan to work on but unless a great opportunity presents itself, I plan to work on that at my own pace and steer clear of the competition format until I feel more comfortable. |

I didn't get any shots that I liked so I didn't submit anything. I don't want to submit anything just for the sake of submitting. Seems like a waste of my time and the voter's time to do that.
When I looked at the submissions I was thinking "That looks like one of the shots I took!" Oh well, maybe next time :)

See, now that's what happened to me in the "games" challenge. I didn't feel confident with my shot, so I didn't submit.... when I saw the pictures at voting time, I thought..."Now, why didn't I at least try then?".
