I disagree for low number of entries I was quite surprised at how many really great entries there were. There were at least 10 I was really impressed with and many more that I thought were quite good.

I think there are some really good ones in there , it is harder than it looks, people tried and that is what counts.

I think there are some very nice entries that nailed it. There are also some very nice entries that don't clearly show that they were taken at night. I didn't mark them down, just an observation.

Yes, it is very hard especially rural, most of the time there is little or nothing to focus on. Just trying to use your camera in the dark is challenging. It was so dark where I took my photo that I could not even see what I was taking a picture of until after the exposure. My exposure times were between 3-5 min each and when you take one that doesn't turn out it is very discouraging. I had to turn my headlamp on to adjust the settings on my camera, then turn it off as to not mess up the lighting and not attract so many mosquitos while I waited for the exposure. Even still I ended up with around 20 mosquito bites. Night photography done in a rural setting is usually not fun, but the results are almost always worth it.

Anyway when I am scoring images, I take my own experience with night photography into account, and adjust my scores accordingly.

I have to use my camera torch light function to make sure I don't step on anything that could bite me, lol.

My God. I hope you are not a federal judge. if you are, I can understand why criminals are still running around on the streets. I can see it now...Judge nightpixels, why did you let a murderer walk? Well, just because he didn't follow the rules like everyone else does doesn't mean he should suffer, does it? HAHAHAHAHAHA. What a joke. (later on, quietly kills someone else and gets away).

Comparing a photo contest to murder?

I didn't mean to offend anyone. I didn't join this challenge even if I had shot. I had an image that was far from my original idea, so I didn't submit it. Shooting far from the city lights it's very hard - all is dark and you have to remember what you have seen during the day to be able to find the right position. I didn't do that (no time to spend for scouting around) therefore I didn't join the challenge. Thus I respect the effort you all made for entering this challenge, even if I'm still thinking there are several DNMC and other not very good images.

Mine is a DNMC, it was shot in a large city, about 20 feet away from a freeway. ... but to me it felt like it embodied rural. I'm curious if I was one of Alexkc's DMNC.

On a side note, I agree that it is damn hard to focus at night. I brought a decent sized Maglite with me, set my AF to center point, and shined the light on my subject. It seemed to have helped, especially when compared with trying to use the AF assist beam.

My scores will near instantaneously drop now that they've been posted:

Woo hoo posthumous could this be your challenge to ribbon.

I think everyone should get 2 extra points just for venturing out at night.

I think the photos are great.
