hahn23: "I know I will be looking for style of Ansel Adams, irrespective of subject."

As will I :)

OK cool...that's reassuring :)
PS> Did anyone know Ansel also explored color photography?

And a gallery of very nice Ansel Adams B&W photographs with quite a few that are lesser known work by him. Some great ideas for the challenge in here.

I see in previous AA challenges where entered images in which the sky is not the intense dark sky that is sometimes seen in some of AA's work, many voters commented saying that the sky should have been darker. However I looked through hundreds of AA's images just now and find that many of his images haven't got that dark sky at all. In fact I find that AA's work can have various different appearances, some very contrasty and other images with a very soft look and not contrasty at all. I think that many people have a preconceived AA style in their minds based on AA's famous image the Tetons. But he did many other images that have a completely different look to them as well.

@ Wendy, thanks for that link, that has encouraged me to give it a try, if I can get in the time to do so!

Ansel's okay, but he's not even a Top 10 photographer.

Would someone tell me if i am incorrect in my following assessment or if they maybe agree even if only to some extent.

I agree somewhat. There seems to be a fairly wide range of sky treatments. Certainly, the sky itself varies with elevation and humidity content and time of day and angle to sun. But also, it appears AA presented a wide range of skies. Finally, Internet reproductions or scans of his work may be poorly rendered. I suspect that viewing the master's work with your own eyes would be the only way to observe what he intended to present.

Bottom line: doing well in this challenge will require producing an image that conforms to what the majority of the voters see as Ansel's "style"; that means strong tonal values, especially in the dark areas, which need to be strong AND detailed, a difficult task. It means strong, simple composition, the balancing of masses against voids or against other masses, it means acute clarity of light. These are the hallmarks of what we call "Ansel's style".

Is that all he ever did? Certainly not! The man was a commercial photographer for most of his life, and he produced a huge variety of work; even a lot of interesting COLOR work, as Fred's so astutely pointed out. But what's he FAMOUS for? That's the road you'll need to follow if you want to reach ribbon territory.

Yup I reckon you summed it up well as far as what is going to be required to score well in this challenge goes and also the reason why.

I have an entry submitted. I like it okay. My only reservation and "concern" is it looks not so good at 800 pixels. Oh, well.

Raining hard in Colorado, today, so I won't be doing a re-shoot. It is what it is. Next challenge.

Absolutely true...I seem to recall that even an entry of a photo he did take did NOT win in one of these challenges.

Says a lot when the creator of the style can't win eh?

This is the hardest challenge I've done - all my editing looks rubbish.

Relax - my editing looks rubbish in easy challenges. This doesn't really help, does it?

If I think of your last landscape entry, I have to say that your editing can't look rubbish :)

You'll note that I avoided foliage with that shot. Never know what to do with it.

LOL. I know what you mean, especially in BW shots.

My first location went sour so my backup location was all ready; I was psyched! and then it started raining. for 2 days. I may have to go to the backup backup location.

After looking at wendy's link, I'm surprised at the color images and all of the portraits. I'm sure most voters aren't going to read this thread, so if you want to do well, get a craggy mountain with a dark sky. I doubt I'll enter, but look forward to seeing what people present. To be honest, I was rather bored with AAII, and only voted on about 25% of them. I'll try to be more thoughtful with my approach this time. Good luck everyone!! :)
