I'm so sad. This morning I woke up and found sometime during the night my camera has gone belly up so to speak. My poor camera has had such a nightmare history. In it's relatively short 3 years of life, it was stolen, rescued (but accidently thrown up against a wall along with the mugger, in a house fire, left in a locked car overnight in a Canadian winter, and finally dropped in sand from a height to catch a falling child. I'm amazed that it as pretty much kept on chugging in a mostly reliable fashion. Sure there were a few quirks, a bit of duct tape, but for the most part it has served me well. A moment of silence please....
=) Well I'm off to Henry's! |

I'm actually not sure what I am going to get. I have a limited budget of about 800 CAD, which I really don't want to go over as I am attempting to buy a specific house within the next year.
I did get excited about the FZ15, until I realized it was only available in the US.
Now I'm considering the Z3. I shoot mostly outdoor shots as I'm an avid hiker/geocacher, as well as a lot of architecture. I'm also looking for something compact enough to easily take traveling because if I don't purchase my house, I'll be hitting the international road a few times a year for the next couple of years.
I'm definitely an amateur, so I don't require high end, on the flip side I like manual controls and a certain degree of flexibility.

You could get the Canon S60. It's very portable and has manual controls too. $699

I'm definitely looking for something with more optical zoom, for wildlife shots. |

Also check the Canon S1 IS -- manual controls, 10x Image Stablized zoom, about $400 US.
Sorry about your Olympus -- sounds like it had a rough but fulfilling life!

Dear Lindsey, Sorry to hear about your camera. Wish you could find one of the new Panasonic FZ15's. Do you live close enough to the border with the USA take a trip down to a camera store here?
The new Panasonic FZ20 is due out on Sept. 4th. It would be a good choice. Or you might be able to get an FZ10 now at a clearance price! I love my FZ10.
The FZ10 is really a STURDY camera, too. Mine has taken some hard knocks and hasn't had any problems. I slammed the car door on it once when it was on my shoulder with the strap and it swung in as I slammed the car door shut. It didn't even dent it! It is built like a tank.

Death of a 3020z.. *sniff* :'(
My old 3020z had a fairly eventful life as well. Been inside countless derelict buildings where the roofs are collapsing, it's been left in a pub on a Friday night (but I managed to get it back eventually), it's fallen down the stairs several times, been held out of train windows at 125mph, and eventually it landed snout first onto a rock.
It's still going, but it's got a rather large scrape accross the lens, making it useless for anything serious now.
I loved the 3020z so much that I replaced it with a 4000z. |
