Hi all,

I've had a five year quest coming nearly to an end... I've been trying to get a really good photo of the Seattle skyline at night from across Eliott Bay (from the west). I have searched and have seen very, very few good photos of Seattle from this angle... maybe there's a reason why?

However, this is the perspective of downtown I see the most, as I ride the ferry. So, while here's my latest, I'm still working on it :)

I'd really like your opinion on what to do next time. I've posted my two favorites:

They both look great, I like the negative space in the second one. Maybe you can capture the same scene but with reflections? That would look great!

It would be, I know... unfortunately, there's no dry land to put a camera on at this angle that's closer than about a mile away from downtown. The reflections sort of get lost at that distance...

Maybe I'll have to rent a heavy boat :)

Hi Marshall. I like the first one a lot. You photographed it during the "blue hour" - IMO the best time for city lights. If you sharpen it, it will be awesome. Did you take several photos and stitch into a panorama? If not, that would be something you can try in the future. Of course, the problem with that is that each time you get ready for the next shot, the ferry is a different distance from the city. I also would like to see some more of the water at the bottom of the composition but even without it, it's wonderful. BTW, I took your photo into PS and sharpened it using the Fred Miranda Intellesharpen II plug in and it looks awesome.

Caba, What's that green monter-like thing on the needle?

It's the alien.

It's a well-kept secret as to where the Space Needle *actually* comes from.

Is that a free plugin? I'll have to google for it.

And actually, I'll try the panorama stitching next. There's not always a ferry moving across the skyline. Thanks for the advice!

Marshalf: Nice work! I really like the second one. A bit less negative space for me on it, but just my opinion.
Good clarity!

It was a giant inflatable alien for the grand opening of the Si-Fi museum at the EMP. I will have to go back to the same spot on Queen Ann hill to shoot again without the alien.

VERY nice! Did you get the top one from Alki? How'd you manage the reflections? Maybe the bay has been too choppy when I've gone out there...

Thanks. Actually it was the bottom of Alki, at one of the parks along the water. It was just one of those perfect nights where the water was smooth and in addition to that I used a tripod and a very slow shutter speed which helped to smooth things out even more.

Here's another one from above Alki. That's the Space Needle Exploding with fireworks on New Years.
