An OS upgrade given some decent reviews and the current price is pretty tempting.

Does anyone have first hand experience with Windows? Your real-time opinions would help me make a decision on it.

Best,
Devinder

I read past days about lots of people DOWNGRADING from 8 to 7, do a quick search and you will see what I mean...

I'll gain some within the next week or so... I'm building a system for my daughter. I've been talking to a friend who just finished a build for his family's "community PC" for which he used Win8. His only real complaint is Microsoft's "forcing" of the interface change (there is no way to go to a "classic" interface. The lack of a "Start button" makes it less intuitive to get to some of the functionality that was previously accessed that way.
The current price is very attractive if you can upgrade, and you can also get Media Center, which will be a stand-alone product for free until I thing January 31 (don't quote me on the date).

I've been using it on one machine at work, testing our printer drivers and software on it.

I know there are some good improvements under the hood, but I really don't like the schizophrenic interface. I guess once one has all of their commonly used applications pinned to the taskbar, it will be better, but I don't like going to the metro screen to launch things. Reminds me of using a third party program launcher under MS-DOS. I may take advantage of the $40 upgrade on one of my machines that still runs XP, but the Win7 machines are staying with Win7.

I'm sure it is nice on a tablet, which is why they did it this way, but I'm not a fan of it right now.

I got it on release for the $40 deal but when I run the upgrade assist on my main machine.... there is almost more software fail then work :-( I will install on a spare machine I am resurrecting in the next few days....

I'm not a fan from what I have seen but I suspect there are ways to get rid of the crappy table based interface.

i think based on what i've read in both threads, I'll make one machine Windows8 and keep the other in 7. Ran upgrade assistant, and the only incompatibility was my old Warcraft3 game. I can play it on my other machine in the rare event that i feel the need.

Thanks!

Keep in mind that it is possible, even likely, that software identified as "incompatible" may be made to run. For instance, MS Office 2003 will be identified as incompatible, but I know it can be made to run.

yea, i figured as much. I m also hoping theres a compatibility mode of some sort, but i like to think of possible duds as definite duds before i know they'll work for sure.

Good heads up on Office!

Thx

From what I've heard the main problem will be with the interface oriented towards touch-screen devices — folks trying to use it on a desktop with mouse and keyboard may go crazy for a while.

I tried Windows 8 as a virtual machine on a desktop iMac back in the developer preview days, and it immediately struck me as Windows 7 with pretty wrapping paper... On the desktop it is easy to get lost in the interface.

Upgraded. No hitches, no problems. Had to upgrade some drivers and re-enabled crossfire.

It really is easy to use with mouse/keyboard. It's different and you need to adjust to it, just like anything new and shiny.

It works great for me and It runs faster than W7, boots quicker and shuts down quicker.

That's what he gets for upgrading Ballmer to Windows 8.

I personally wont touch Win 8 not atleast for a little while. I have been patiently waiting for a new SP for Win 7 only to find out they will not make a new one.

I hate change. Well, when it comes to computers... Did read about W8 and as others have pointed out, it's predominantly designed for portable hardware (tablets, phones, etc.). The big, bold graphic interface drives me crazy - not as easy to scan for files when they're tiled, versus listed alphabetically. Most annoyingly, it was designed to make you have to buy new hardware with touch screen capabilities. How "fortuitous" that they've also released a brand, spanking new phone, just in time.

Grrrrrr....

There are plenty of "hacks" to get the old start menu back. Just search the web for it.

Here comes another Apple law suit.

It occurs to me that, with the amount of cash they supposedly have on hand, maybe Apple should just buy Microsoft and save on all those legal costs ...

Windows 8 phones have been out for at least a year although they haven't had much marketing support. Critics have generally liked them.

They are obviously going for some synergy.

I'm using Windows 8 now and can't say I find it particularly hard to use. One click and the screen looks just like the Windows 7 screen minus the start button (which you can have show up by just pointing your mouse to the corner). There ARE some differences, but they can be learned and in many ways they are improvements.

I was pretty sold on the Lumia 920 from what i've read about it so far. I like the idea of a low light friendly zeiss approved picture taker on it =), but its AT&t only and i m happy with my verizon so =/

I just bricked one machine.... It says it will rollback if any problems... bah.. wrong... I just get a hardware error on reboot, so it's possibly playing with some bios settings that I assume are kaput on this machine..... Should have known better as I never move windoze early - serves me right :-( Guess I'm putting XP back on this machine :-/

MS did provide a mini-tutorial that plays during the install process with the live release that gives you the hints you need to do things like shut down the pc. I HATE the slow start-up and shut-down of Windows (95 through Win 7), so Win 8 is a HUGE improvement with its much faster startup & shutdown.
I agree that Win8 will be easier to use with a touch screen device, but it still has advantages even without the touch screen.
