I am so disgusted and disappointed by this ridiculous petty and childish behaviour. I'm sick of it. I'm going to identify my image so that SC will DQ me and put me out of my misery...

My image is titled "Falling Apart"
Go on... find it and DQ me. |

Yeah, that's the spirit of the site. If you don't get the score you want then leave the site... |

I have no horse in this challenge, but let me say this to those who are thinking of quitting.
Do you REALLY want to hand over MORE power to those who vote petty and purposely vote low????
For EVERY one person who votes fairly and balanced that is driven off these few individuals who 'lowball' GET STRONGER in that they effect the outcome more. Do you want to give the few even more power???
For EVERY one person driven off, we as a community have less variety and less competition. NOT a good combination.
The best way to 'stick it' to those who purposely vote low is to
1) not give them the satisfaction or power by resorting to leaving.
2)as highly annoyed and upset one can get don't show it but make fun of it thereby robbing the lowballers ANY enjoyment they would get from lurking in the scores thread.
3) If you suspect deliberate voting tactics then ASK for an investigation. What occurred in The Edward Weston challenge comes to mind.

A note on the Edward Weston challenge - I DQed myself in that challenge before an investigation turned up a handful of 'cheaters'.
I have regretted that I DQed myself in that challenge because:
1) I gave more power to those individuals who cheated.
2) I'll never know what my true score would have been or if I would have received any good comments. In effect I cheated myself. |

CNovack: Everything you said = +1
As they say in the rap music "Haters gonna Hate"
There is someone out there, or possibly a few that really like to serve up the 1's, 2's, and 3's on Images that wind up on the front page, let alone top 10, or whatever else. Could be a disgruntled site member, a treasure troll, who knows. But also who cares? Keep having fun here at DPC, keep making fun of our own scores when they are low (Food for thought: might not always be due to the voter), and keep congratulating each other when we ribbon, PB, or TT.
You get a little sand in the face here from time to time with votes, don't let that scare you away!
Nick

Likewise, those 1s 2s and 3s could be truly legitimate votes. Too cliche, been there done that, or in some cases DNMC. We have lots of DNMC that win or place top 10 even though they don't remotely shoehorn into the theme but are pretty (or recognizable as works of favorite sons and daughters) |

Yes but there are less and less incentives to stay. My favorite genre of photography seems to be restricted now to FS only and keeps on getting negative impolite remarks. There is just too much meanness and impoliteness on this site spoiling everything good it has to offer. I wish SC was more active in keeping the discussions and voting civil. |

i guess my image isn't as bad as i thought.
i figured i'd end up with a mid 3... only entered it to get full TPL score credit as i didn't do the portrait challenge...
at least everybody in TPL will have the same bad scoring challenge across the board.

One quick (not meant to be snarky, but conversationally polite) comment to Margaret, you said "your favorite genre of photography..." as you told me once a while back, this site tends to notice trends, and identify people with them, so while it's good to have a preferred style, if you don't want to be recognized you need to be doing new things and trying out alternate techniques and subjects - that's what this site is about. |

Not really, no. I understand that people are gonna do what people do when it comes to expressing preferences, and I'm willing to leave it at that. I consistently give 9's and 10's to images that end up with averages in the low 4's. If I don't consider THAT outrageous, why should I think LOW scores on images that end up well-placed are outrageous? I may think it's RIDICULOUS that any given image receives a low vote, but that's just me and my personal preferences having an opinion. And ridiculous isn't outrageous. In the end scores don't matter anyway, just placements. |

It is good when you start learning but eventually you focus on your preferred subject. Look at the majority of the better photogs on this site - they have either distinctive style or preferred subjects and they don't care about being recognized. |

For the DPC beloved, being "recognized" is a ticket to a ribbon, no matter how lacking the entry might be compared to the others. Why they would hide I have no idea. |

"bolding" is mine. So important that we remember this. It's hard to get away from the score, especially during voting when it's all you can see, but as we've seen time and again, the images that end up on top are almost invariably strong; I have no doubt that that will again be the case here. |

To me this is the bigger key. Good comments, that are constructive (pro or con) ultimately mean a lot more. Snipes do nothing and aren't helpful.
The bigger bottom line is: Do I like it and am I proud to call it mine? |

my score is in the crapper, too.
i've shifted somewhat from trying to place to trying to beat my own average, so the low scoring bugs me, esp when i am seeing "apparent" lowballing.
but then i realize the main benefit I get from DPC is that it makes me get out and shoot

When my shot doesn't "click" with everyone, I too am happy to at least beat my crappy 5.44 average :) |

I'm finished voting. I find Expert Editing categories hard to judge b/c there is such a wide variety - from techno-editing that is creating a whole new scene, to minimal-editing of a beautiful existing scene. It's like comparing apples to oranges. I tried to be fair and give out just as many high scores as low scores. There are some really amazing ones. |
