Awww, really? Am I the only one who is bothered by the front page turning into Fox News? |

No, you're not. Honestly, what's the point in posting this unremarkable non-news? |

Mostly now, if the "source" says Fox News, I just don't open it. |

In this case the link is to CNN ...
FWIW I have no problem with such threads as long as the title is suitably descriptive (as in this case), so that those who don't want to waste their time on such non-photographic topics can easily avoid them ... it is the "mystery" titles ("I can't believe this happened!") which "trick" people into opening the thread that I find most annoying.

Which, of course has been quite a good laugh, as it really is a bit of a commentary on just how much people miss when it comes to the details.
Really though, here's my (not surprising) opinion - I do think George Zimmerman's heart is in the right place, and always has been - and I think this is evidence of that. Not everyone would stop and get involved, especially if they have genuine reason to fear for their life and are vehemently hated by half of America. I do think it's a valid news piece.
Certainly, you didn't mean to imply that it was only 'valid' if it was about him shooting someone else? Surely all of you aren't so horribly biased?

I agree with you Cory. Zimmerman is not a racist and wants to help his community

when I first saw the story it was emblazoned with the "Fox News" emblem.
And with that, I'll bow out of this conversation, since it has appropriately gone to Rant. |

Not quite sure why you, or kirbic or Clive "bowed in" in the first place. None of you commented on the topic or contributed to the conversation. There was a time when the SC would have pointed that out.
Just for fun, I'll join the Zimmerman hating lemmings and say that he probably caused the SUV to flip in the first place. |

Because, FWIW, I believe that this kind of post really has no place on the front page, and I am, last I checked, allowed to voice that opinion. If it had even a tangential relationship to photography, great. If it was actually newsworthy, great. If it was of personal import to a member of the community, great. This was none of those things, in fact rooum has it exactly right, it is unremarkable non-news. |

That is correct. Nothing to see here. Now let's all go back to guessing the name of the royal baby or winning that Last Wins thread or checking out those funny kitty videos or guessing whattheheckitis or watching a video of someone getting robbed or determining if there is a god or maybe discussing the various methods of irrigation.
This was a current news story about a topic everyone in the effing country has been at odds about for several weeks now and a valid story in relation to the discussion we were having here before it was summarily locked. Give me a f***ing break. If you don't want to participate or comment on the topic, MOVE ALONG. Correct me if I am wrong, but it's not your job to determine what non-photography subjects get posted and what do not and if it is, let me know so I can send you a list of threads you should feel compelled to barge into and announce that those topics re not news or discussion-worthy. |

Well, one thing is obvious to me for sure.
America isn't mature enough yet to have a discussion about anything worth discussing. We'd much rather just surround ourselves with people who think the same things we think, and try out best not to argue with anyone, or interact with those who aren't like ourselves.
A sad state of affairs, since there really are a huge number of issues raised by this case which are worthy of discussion.
And of course, those who would discuss it are decried as racists or bigots, personally attacked, or some other asinine bullshit. No wonder no-one seems to have an opinion on this, other than the desire to stick their heads as far into the sand as possible.
Oh well, I made an honest attempt to spur some further discussion, I can see now that this is a doomed subject.
We'll still be hearing about this case when I'm an old man I suspect. A non-issue indeed. |

I agree it's worthy of discussion, but people are incapable of discussion here. I've participated in great discussions on other sites, and the tone of argument here is not a sign that "America isn't mature enough yet." The people on this site are not mature enough. This thread is extremely short and already there's a level of anger that is annoying.
Incidentally, I didn't see that anyone accused anyone of being a racist in the locked thread. |

Have you considered how a comment like this might help engender that anger?
Maybe if everyone can remember to talk about the topic and not each other the discussion will go better. |

Perhaps, you can just lock the thread, as I requested, and we can be done with this.
I've seen a face of DPC that I don't care for in the last couple of weeks, and it has absolutely lowered my opinion of the community. This thread was simply a huge confirmation of my feelings on the subject. |

Fair enough, I was just using Cory's terminology.
Cory, I don't think the SC will lock up a thread on request unless it's a Buy/Sell thread or it has crossed lines of offensiveness. |

I'd say this has crossed that line. About 12 hours ago in fact. |

I'd prefer to let people try and take care of this themselves ... if no one has anything to say on the actual topic then the thread can just die. |

The problem is that they've got plenty to say, just nothing useful, productive, or even on-topic.
Frankly, upon the appearance of jagar's shitty little sniping troll post, it took a rather serious bit of self-control to not immediately post something that would have qualified this thread for a lockdown.

And this is exactly the kind of "sniping back" which creates the escalation you claim to deplore. Your derogatory adjectives are wholly unnecessary.
Frankly, it should not take that much self-control to simply follow the rules and not respond at all but rather hit the "Report Post" button for anything which seems out of line. |
