Lisa, you've been BAD, very bad - But I'm sure Kermie thinks no less of you. (by the way, Lisa has been punished for her actions). |

Someone mentioned in another thread the idea of stagering the start and end dates of the contests. If the contest ended on sunday and a new contest was not announced till wendsday we would have a little time to focus on explanations and reshoots and demontrations of techniques. Monday would be hash day. Out takes sould wait till the end of the week also. I'm all in favor of maintaining annoniminity. But there really is no time to deal with past work because we get so busy on the future challenge. Thats my nickle's worth (infation you know) aelith. |

Aelith, I think that's an excellent idea. Instead of 4 challenges a month, there would be what? 3 challenges? That would still be more than I would be able to handle on a regular basis. I noticed too that by Tuesday, the previous submission week pretty much is history. Yet, it contains plenty of discussion and educational material. |

I agree with Karen.
Basically what has worked in the past has been whenever someone can'ttake it any more and "spills over" into the forum, right away someone tells them to please put a lid on it, and they usually do.
I guess what's unusual on these past few discussions is that no one really stepped up... I wonder why that is ... ? |

NOT! He never had a chance and incidentally his score is going down (currently 4.434). I now understand that there are ramnifications that I hadn't taken into consideration when I commented on him, but I had no intention of trying to sway any votes or even defend my poorly chosen submission.
None of the comments regarding him/photo quality bothered me at all...but I am getting a little bent that others who I perceived to be trying to 'manipulate' votes aren't being mentioned here. I don't even really want this thread to go there but if Kermi's going to become the poster child for premature discussion, at least go back and give him a 1 and make an example out of him/me. Make this big mess worth something.
Ahhh. I feel better now...carry on. :P
ROFL!
Nothing personal intended, I assure you. I started this thread not because I have a problem with the discussion (I'm not sure what my opinion is on the issue) but because such threads in general were becoming more common to the point where I think we need to establish whether they're a good idea.
Regardless of what rule change if any comes out of this I don't think anyone who's posted about their photo to date did anything wrong; the fact remains such posts are not against the rules right now.
Besides, we ♥ Kermi!

Originally posted by myqyl: Maybe a section (like web suggestions, rants, etc...) called Spoilers or some such could be used to discuss photos in the current challenge. I think that constructive discussion in an open forum would be a good thing, while those that prefer not to know can just not read that section.
If I thought that discussion would affect the vote, I'd say outlaw it, plain and simple. But if you consider that with about 300 voters, 30 people would have to bump a photo up 1 point to make a .1 difference in the average, I find it highly unlikely that discussion would affect a score by overly much. I would venture to guess that only about 30 people read the forums regularly. I have to think the educational benefit would outweigh the possible contamination of the vote.
Of course throw the idea of prizes into the mix and all bets are off.
But that's just me :)
This is pretty much option #3 from above, better stated than I did. I think "Spoilers" is a good name for the folder. The only problem that I have with this idea (which was my favorite and might still be, I'm not sure) is that certain users would be excluded-by-choice from the discussions and miss out on their value. I see benefits to this idea, but also benefits to saying "hold off till the voting is closed."

If the timing of the contests changes their frequency will most likely be increased, not decreased. We'd have an overlap before we had a gap.

Probably because there's been no clear determination on whether it's OK or not, so people might have been reluctant to speak for everyone. Also with prizes coming it's important to get a handle on whether we should hide posts/threads that reveal a photo.

They'd only be self excluded until the vote is over, then they could hop in with both feet and stir the kettle some more.
It wouldn't be perfect by a long shot, but it's worth considering. I also see benefits to each school of thought here and will be blissfully happy whichever way it goes :)
