I have had help from the SC in the past, and I have greatly appreciated it. And it was long before I had bribed every one of them with the extensive wine and cheese parties. (Trips to MN for sick parents and dying parents over the last number of years -- and I've definitely needed help a few times.)
Sometimes life gets in the way. The whole idea is not to do your best and not to cheat. The rest is so unimportant in the scheme of things. I have received ribbons because of other people getting DQd. That's not how I want to ribbon, and I'm pretty sure most people are the same way.
Yes -- we have the ability to upload pictures if we're going to be out of town. But for those of us who have traveled before the holidays, it's even more stressful than traveling in general -- and that can be stressful enough.
I, for one, applaud the SC for realizing which rules are important and which rules really have some flexibility.
I enjoy being part of a site that has a heart. The virtual ribbon is so unimportant in the scheme of things, but so is an extra day.
Perhaps it wasn't advertised exactly because of the reactions being seen in this thread. It was well past being on the front page, so of what importance is it to anyone but those directly affected by it? (and maybe hajeka and the points and ribbons race. :)
Kudos to a site that treats people like people, and has a heart, and realizes that life gets in the way.
Kudos for littlemav for being happy for the reinstatement, even though it meant the loss of a ribbon.
This is why this site remains great. Because the people are people and keep in mind what's important.
Yeah DPC!

Yes, life sometimes gets in the way. But some people are disqualified after 48 hours and some are not. Where do we draw the line on being fair? And how do we know which rules are flexible? I didn't know the 48 hour rule was flexible until now.
Not trying to call anyone out or be heartless, but I guess this is either business as usual or the beginnings of downward slippery slope. |

The rule has never been "hard and fast." First and foremost, that is because it's impossible for it to be so. DQs are done manually, so they get done as the SC has the resources to do them. Usually, that's not precisely 48 hours after rollover.
In the worst case, where it has been 48 hours or longer and there has been no communication from the user, and no response to second attempts, a DQ will happen relatively soon after the 48 hours. If there is communication, the user has extenuating circumstances and asks for a little time (a day or so) it will usually be granted as long as the user is not a habitual abuser of the system (yes, they do exist). In the end, the SC tries to be fair and equitable. While it would be great if everyone had the forethought to make sure that files were uploaded ahead of time if they would be unavailable, it doesn't always happen. Also, unforeseen issues can arise, e.g. upload problems or incorrect files uploaded. I think that, all things considered, it is a very good thing that we give folks a little leeway where we can, that is, where it does not open the system up to abuse. |

I don't have a problem with that, and I guess everyone else has figured it out. I would have just assumed I would get a DQ if I didn't submit within 48 hours. |
