to lazy to see if it's been done, but if not, would be pretty cool.

No interest? I might re-up for a year if they did this one...

Great idea as far as I'm concerned. I used to idolize Avedon. What an interesting man and interesting life. There's a quote from him that always stuck with me: "The art of seeing is the beginning of Art."

Would be a good learning exercise. In the name of personal photography improvement we need more kicks in the ass, so to speak, rather than silly (in my opinion) plant/animal/specific-object themes.

You know what book(s) I'm reading that gave me this idea right Robert? ;)

One of the two "Portraits" books, or possibly the Autobiography?

if that's all you see when you look at his work than you are sorely missing the point

I predict lots of white sweeps and diffuse lighting.

Has this ever been done? In the style of Richard Avedon?

I would suggest minimal editing but with:

1) the requirement to use 4x5 format (crop allowed)
2) the permission to add a border similar to 4x5 film negative
3) black and white conversion allowed

or just allow standard editing with the border then?

Amazingly, it has NOT been done, although I could have sworn it had been... That's certainly an omission on DPC's part, eh?

Regarding your points:

MINIMAL? Avedon was a master craftsman in the darkroom, or his assistants were anyway...

1) It's not a great idea to police dimensions so strictly. If only because no digital camera of which I'm aware shoots 4x5 as a native format. I envision voters with ill-formated screens saying "THAT'S not 4x5, no way!" and downvoting...

2) The film-like borders are legal anyway.

3) B/W conversion is always allowed in DPC, including under minimal rules (but you have to do a simple, manipulated conversion in Minimal).

SUMMARY: Standard editing with no special rules would seem to fill the bill.
