We have had some fantastic challenges on food and I know we have some of the most fantastic chef's - cooks on this web site as well, be it home cooks, family tradition recipe, fav recipe etc etc.
I know I would buy a cook book ($25-45) from recipes here.
Maybe it can be done in challenges again.
It could go towards the new developer or just to the developer to make DPL coding possible.
I am sure some people would rather have something in their hands to look at and be useful, versus just giving money and kinda not seeing/having anything they can see in return.
Any thoughts |

It's a lovely idea, but it comes from the woman who visited me and Karma the Wonderdog way back in 2006 or something and refused to share with me what she claimed is the best enchilada recipe ever, and boy that still stings. Especially after she lost my dog! What a visit that was!
But, seriously, it's not cheap to make a book in limited quantities. Someone would have to figure out the logistics... |

It's all true, and it was the bestest of best enchilada soup. I had totally forgotten about that soup, probably haven't had it years. Let me see if I can find it. |

Short-run color printing (and bindery -- people forget about that part) IS pretty expensive.
However, since almost all printers now require source material to be in high-resolution PDF format, we could distribute it in that form and let people print their own, or only the pages they need on paper ... I could probably get printing estimates given a ballpark number of pages, type of cover/binding, and number of copies requested. |

I think distributing in PDF form is a fabulous idea... currently, all my recipes are stored electronically. My M.O. when cooking is to print out a "sacrificial copy" of the recipe and use that sheet as reference during cooking, and also to record any notes/thoughts for later inclusion in the file with the recipe.
Would be nice to have the option of hard copy, and having a cost estimate would be outstanding! For reference, I recently supported a Kickstarter project for a macro photography book (printed, hard-cover). The result is stunning. It's about 250 pages if memory serves, and my cost was about $75 USD. I do not know how many copies were printed, probably way more than we are talking here. |

It poses some problems if there's money involved, but otherwise it's great -- a lot of people got some experience through the SoFoBoMo projects.
Your book price sounds in the ballpark to me -- I'm guessing the print run was maybe still in the hundreds. Regular hardcover binding is expensive -- for a cookbook maybe consider spiral-binding to it can lie flat when open. |

This triggers me that I still have to make a book. Perhaps a nice project for this winter. A PDF and a book on Blurb will be the end result I hope

Yes, definitely should be considered. It is far more "casual" than a hardcover book, but IMO would be appropriate here. |

I was involved in getting a photo-dependent anatomy book printed a while ago at Edition One in Berkeley -- AFAIK the quality and price were good enough for the college paying for the project, though things are usually more expensive out here on the left coast ... |

Those plastic comb bindings don't hold up that well for long-term use -- they're better for things like class readers or more-or-less archival documents.
I was referring to the metal-coil/spiral type of binding, which causes less wear to the pages (especially combined with a hard cover) and lies flatter than the plastic ones. |

Well this is all your fault!! You keep posting such marvelous photos of food on FB, then remembering the 3 day non-stop cooking stock that Bear made and the fantastic chicken dinner. I know I have some lovely recipes as well.
Its a thought with merit, but interesting to do the logistics.

Of course everything needs to include a photo of the results -- not just the recipe! |
