How about an archival challenge with a very general topic and let’s see if we can get 75 entries;)!
Whoops. Looks like the subject title didn’t come up :( Don’t know how to correct it.

I'm always up for an archival challenge. So many shots that didn't suit a topic. |

I could certainly use a break. It's SO hard to actually go out and take new photos all the time. Can take a day off and just browse the hard drive. Go for it. |

It could be called “Archival Free Study” ? |

Nah. Give it something. Landscape would bring everyone out of the woodwork. Or Animals. Otherwise it's just a 'Best of ...' 6 months early. Already have TWO Free Studies a month. If you can't shoot something new in 30 days why even bother owning a camera?! |

The idea is to stimulate interest in people who don’t shoot a lot and maybe entice them to get out and shoot more and possibly enter more challenges! That’s what this site used to be all about.

Look at the history of archival challenges. Look at who entered. See how many actually shot ANYTHING else. After the pandemic and archival challenges mostly went away, so did those that entered archival challenges. Not everyone, but the majority.
Not trying to rain on your parade. Your suggestion will, I'm sure, generate a higher number of entries - but it's not long-lived. Think about it. No work required except for maybe a little armchair post-processing.
I do think there's a place for archival challenges, with a limited scope, to be run a few times a year. But give them a theme. At least make people do SOME work to enter. This is a challenge site after all. |

So what you’re saying is DPC is defined by a small number of serious photographers who like to compete on a regular basis. Maybe so but that has obviously not worked either as the number of contributors has steadily declined. I didn’t say the Archival free study would be a regular challenge. That came from somebody else. I was only suggesting it as a one time suggestion to entice people to enter pictures they would like to display that they haven’t had the opportunity to do. I didn’t think it would turn into a debate! |

What you're proposing is a one time "happy happy" that I've agreed would generate a one time increased participation level.
What I've mentioned is that we should run a few archival challenges throughout the year, as themed challenges with an open, archival date range.
In either case, archival challenges are a very temporary blip, and go against what the basis of DPChallenge is. The nature of DPChallenge is to find a way to capture an image, based on a theme, within the allotted time period, and put them out there for a vote and results. It's not easy, but it can be fun and challenging!

People can ALWAYS display images here. We have an entire setup for portfolios, image galleries, and forum threads to do so. I would love to see those kind of threads come back. |
