For the purpose of the Ć¢€œVegetableĆ¢€ challenge are tomatoes considered a fruit or allowable as a vegetable? Botanically they are considered a fruit but in 1937 the Supreme Court ruled they were vegetables for the purpose of coordinating tariffs. So for this challenge I think we need to put all our eggs in one basket and agree one way or the other!!

Tomato, Tomahto...
I think not considering them a vegetable would be a bit fruity.

I agree. Tomatoes are eggs.

Cucumbers, squash, peppers, eggplant, etc. are all botanically fruits as they encase seeds.

The culinary difference as to if something's commonly considered fruit or vegetable seems to depend on the amount of sugar in the flesh and whether they are commonly eaten uncooked.

FWIW mushrooms are defined as the "fruiting body" of the underlying fungus, as they produce spores rather than true seeds.

This sounds like a challenge description of late. LOL

It's up to the voters anyway. I can't imagine very many people will downgrade tomatoes because fruity. Ditto for all the rest listed by GeneralE. If it comes right down to it, MOST "true" vegetables aren't especially attractive when split open. If you'd serve it as a vegetable at dinner, it's a vegetable, is my opinion. Not that it counts for much, but...

We used to play Animal, Vegetable, Mineral and for that game every plant was considered vegetable.

Sooooo.....

If you cook it, it's a vegetable?

Cool! If my doc says eat more veggies, I'll just chow down an apple pie!

Also......the thought of cooked cucumbers kind made my stomach roil.

And I eat 'em at least three times a week.
