I have 8 comments on a current challenge, all of them say the border is horrible. I find not alot of people like borders. So therfore I will never use one in a challenge again. No matter how good I think it is.

Well, you could perhaps try using a border that isn't horrible?
I personally like to use a simple 8-10 pixel white border, and nobody's complained.

Travis,
Did you use a border or a frame? Quite a number of challenge images benefit from discreet borders, but the use of a "replica frame" is probably gonna get hooted down very time. You know the kind, looks like a matted print in a 3-dimensional frame...

I always use borders and haven't had any negative reactions from anyone. You might have used a frame with shadows or something like that, which actually detracts from the photo. I suggest using simple borders in the future... |

I'm "guilty" here. I haven't commented on any borders in a while, but generally speaking, I don't like them.
Yes, there are exceptions to this rule, but essentially:
if a photo is good, a border won't improve it, it will only distract from it.
If you think you MUST have a border, keep it very plain and simple.
It seems that borders can do more harm than good to a score on dpc. |

I don't mind borders when they're not overpowering. Most of my images here have borders.

Ag,
Yeah, that one will kill ya every time, LOL. Takes you out of "photography" and into "graphic arts." Works well for using pictures on websites, as elements of the design, but not right for here.
I edit a poetry e-zine, and use a lot of that sort of thing in there:
//www.susquehannaquarterly.org
And we use frames there too, if we are representing actual art. See Thomas Pickering's Vermeer poems...

Brad, your triptych frames seemed to enhance that image. Can't figure why, it just looks very appealing.

IMO Brad's pic is more appealing as a triptych than it would be straight. Occasionally an image comes along that begs for something different in its presentation, and this is one of them. I'd definitely commend him for his courage here.

I agree Brad's frame here is very appealing.
I also think that every photograph can look great with a border. The question is what kind of border. A simple, plain colored border, thin or thick depending on the photographed subject can add a lot IMO.
The idea is to find the right border that enhances the picture, the colors, the subject. Not a frame/border that is a subject of its own.

I think that I shall never see
A frame lovely as a tree.
A tree whose photo online is here

Appologies to Joyce Kilmer

It seems to me (no detective work done here) that most of the ribbon winners seem to have a border of some kind. |

The best borders, you do not see... The worst borders are all you see...

Actually, out of the last 10 challenges, 8 of 30, or 27% of the ribbon-winning images have had borders.
