Actually doing better than I had hoped. I also have to admit that my best shots for 2004 had already been submitted. This one was a leftover.

Okay, just to make everyone else's day, I am at a 4.6. It seems everything I enter stinks it up. I have to finally admit it: I pretty much suck at this. My average score is 4.9 (I think. That may be an overestimate and I am too lazy right now to go check.) I did know that this entry would get creamed, but I, personally, love it! It really is my favorite of 2004 (oh dang, that's the problem. The challenge was BEST of 2004 not favorite. ;-)
Besides, I had such and amazing day at work that I don't deserve anymore positives in my life right now. I had two students get PERFECT scores on their writing proficiencies. Nothing can ruin my day.
Carry on all you inhabitants of the realm of 6.5 and above. Tell me, what is life really like up there? |

That's much more impressive than any score here. Congrats to them, and to you for being an awesome teacher! :o)

...and slowly climbing. I limited myself to shots that I had not previously posted, however I had posted a similar shot to the one I went with, and lo and behold, one commentor recognized me, LOL.
I didn't really feel that 2004 was a stellar year for me, but it was one of major improvement. If I improve half as much in 2005, I will be ecstatic!

Mine has been pretty solid in the dismally low fives. It started out at about 5.3 and dropped quickly to about where it is now. For the past several days it has fluctuated a little between 5.0 and 5.1, but no wild swings or trends. It's maybe a half point worse than I expected, which is no big deal really, but I'd like to have more than three comments out of 188 votes...

If I may give my two cents...
This is the first challenge ever for me. I entered my best selling photo of 2004. I am not a professional photographer, just show my best stuff to friends, family, etc. I've sold 8 of these at a pretty good price (half-way to my next lense).
I'm interested in the voting, looking for real comments to help me get better, but I'm not in photography for kudos from people I don't know.
The sound of my shutter releasing is the best sound in my life - well next to some music. I just love it. It's the best thing I have ever done as a hobby, and it brings me joy.
How did you feel when you first saw your entry? Did it make your life better to feel that good about yourself and what you had accomplished? I hope so. I hope it brings you joy too.
I've judged the entire challenge. What a great representation of the talent on this site. You did good. If anybody doubts it, tell them Digital Knight said!
You did good.

I am quite certain that the image I entered is the best photo I've ever taken. Ever. Nearly all of the 13 comments I've received have been positive, it's been favorited once during the challenge and twice before (it was in my portfolio). However, it's currently at a 5.6560. That puts it in 5th place of my personal bests. That is shocking. The people voting it down have some 'splainin' to do. ;)

The interesting thing about Favorites is that it has nothing to do with how you rate overall. The only image I've ever had someone choose as a favorite ended up in the 9% at the end of the challenge... 'splain that ;) |

Well we're neck and neck for the bottom rungs of this ladder. And I am in a similar case. Thirteen positive, often glowing comments, 2 favorites, and my score can't seem to hold on to a 5.7 (it hits it, goes to 5.74 even, then a 1 or a couple of them drag it down into the 5.6s)
I am not worried about the score anymore (he says). Having favorites means someone really likes it. People expressing sincere kudos in the comments is great too. It may be that yours, like mine, appeals to a more limited audience than the voting public. When you get a 1 for every 10, and a 2 for every 9, ... you end up with a 5.0 average. Doing better than that at least means you've tilted the scales a little.
Still, I do often wonder if there's a better place to be. But I've tried many of them, and this is where I still am (for now, anyway).
By the way, you have a great portfolio.
Edit: Spelling.

I've made it through little over half of the shots so far, and have found that I really like most of what I have seen so far, and voted 75% of them higher than where my submission is sitting after 218 votes.
Superb work all - your pride shines!
Added:
And now done. Still ranked 75% of the shots better than what my score is. currently holding. I haven't added this many favorites ever in such a short amount of time.
Damn you folks did well here.

Ummm, actually, you end up with a 5.5 which is the true average available on a 1 to 10 scale....
(I prefer to look at the % placement after the challenge is over. Or the median value for a particular challenge and am happy when I'm higher.)

This is an interesting challenge. My score has been slowly inching it's way up, and a lot of really nice comments. I'd be very happy about 6.3+ if this wasn't such a STRONG challenge. No, that's not true, I'm very happy about anything above 6. (actually happy about everything above my avg of 5.4)
No favs so far, but I can always hope.

I know my entry is quite "artsy" and this does'nt usually score well on DPC, however I'm pleased with the results so far. It started in 7.127 and now is hovering around 6.200

My score goes up through the day, 3-5 o'clock it gets knocked back to whence it came. It's been as high during the day as 5.74, then knocked back to 5.65.
It's obviously not to the DPC mass tastes, but the commenters all really liked it so far. Unfortunately, I'm guessing this is below the 50% mark on this challenge, maybe way below it!

I'm suprised to see that not a lot of comments are being made.
You have rated 62 of 531 images (12%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 62 images (12%) in this challenge.
Hey TEACHER can I have a 2 week extension on my homework??? I'm far to busy to be grading all these images in such a short time with work and all.

I say we take a vote on a voting deadline extension for the best of 2004 challenge.

I'm having a really hard time with this voting lark. Some of the photos are truly stunning, and score 8s or 9s from me. A tiny handful are outstanding, and get a 10. I don't think I've had the heart to give a 1 yet, and even a blurry photo (apologies blindjustice) with good framing and subject gets a 2 or a 3.
Since the average of the scale is 5.5, good pics get 6 and above, less interesting 5 and below. I understand everyone has different tastes, but looking at some of my previous scores from the first two challenges, and the incredible mediocrity of my current score (5.6 something with only 6 comments), I can't help but wonder how everyone else votes?
Ok, I'm biased, but how does a well executed, but clearly not perfect photo merit 1 out of 10? Are people voting low to reduce the average and bump their own pics higher? That 1 costs a lot in an average when you are battling for every .1.
It just disheartens me really in my third challenge here. Of course I have a *huge* amount still to learn, but maybe this voting is taking the focus of what we should be getting out of DPC - the joy of taking and viewing photos of the things we see all over the world.
Anyway, we'll see how it all ends up.

All you can do is just keep trying. Try reading a book about photography like "photography for dummies". Despite its title it has enough useful information in it for beginners and for the price.

Don't feel bad. You have some wonderful pictures in your DPC portfolio.
Sometimes we just make the wrong choice of an image to submit. Perhaps that is what happened this time with you. It has happened plenty of times with me. :)
