hello. i'm ashley, sixteen.
i've always had a really strong interest in photography, but since i used to model, i was always in front of the camera rather than behind it. but recently, i went out and bought a camera. and i've really enjoyed it, but most of my photos were just snapshots of my friends and i, so i was hoping that joining this site might motivate me to explore the artistic portion of photography.
anyway, because of my lack of experience, i was hoping someone might give me a few tips about setting up in general? such as, how do i get lighting where i want it? how do i adjust contrast? and how can i get the focus precise?
thanks

I would go to the library and get books on photography and read everything that you can to learn how to take good photos. Then practice everyday what you learn.

Welcome Ashley. You will find that you can learn a phenomenal amount on this site. It does take an investment of time. My best recommendation for learning here is to follow some of the threads on editing, especially those where someone posts a photo and asks for help improving it. You'll begin to see that there are a thousand ways to approach even a single shot.
Over time, you'll pick up not only shooting techniques but editing techniques as well. Also, don't be afraid to just jump in and submit to the open challenges. You'll receive a lot of feedback, some positive, some negatve, some helpful and some not. All of it can be of use to you in improving your photography.
You'll also find a very supportive community, and you may just find you grow addicted :-)

Welcome Ashley. Along with what kirbic suggested, I would recommend reading through the tutorials and "How'd they do that?" articles here:

Good luck and have fun here!

Hi Ashley. Welcome. It would be pretty hard not to learn a lot if you hang around here for a while. What kind of photography are you interested in? Looking forward to seeing some of your shots in challenges soon.

i found the tutorials to be very informative. even the post-processing ones, the true beauty of digital is the post-processing.

I actually have that same camera as a carry around camera and the great thing about it is that it will allow you to shoot in Manual, Av, and Tv modes which, in turn, will let you get more creative. There was actually a link in another thread that you may find helpful.
//photoinf.com/ (It is mostly articles relating to composition)
As far as getting focus precise... on the A85, just press the shutter button down half way and the focus point will be indicated by a green box on the LCD. If you have specific questions I'm sure you could post them on the forums and get good, quick responses or I doubt there are many members that would mind a private message.
Best of Luck... but beware... its addicting ;)
