Interesting for specialty use, but why one would want an EVF on an SLR is beyond me.

If the viewfinder screen image is available remotely, say on a laptop, it would be extremely useful. Self portrait would habe been a doddle!

Astronomers would love the EVF feature. They don't want to shake the telescope when they look through the viewfinder.

This totally rocks! I'd buy one if I could, anyone from Japan here?

Remember, the Black 300D was only in Japan when it was first introduced.

I'll chime in with EVF Lag is why I moved along from the PowerShot Pro1. Not a problem for tripod shots and stills....that TTL (through the lens) signal has to be turned into something viewable on LCD kind of like when you hit the play button.

If the display don't tilt and swivel like the Pro1 kind of a useless update IMO.

After moving into the dSLR world from regular digicams I have to say I would welcome an LCD preview with open arms, there has been many a setup where getting my eye to the viewfinder has been near impossible. I've never owned a digicam with a tilt an swivel but I do know what I'm missing by not having a preview.

Bugger that this is only for Japan. I agree that it prolly will be released to the US if there is enough demand. For astrophotography, this would be the ultimate DSLR! The "live LCD" feature for focusing would be incredible, but only if you could zoom to 100% while doing the focusing, otherwise it would really be of marginal use. I do think the using the LCD in normal operation would have some use, esp. when shooting above crowds and in other situations where one can't keep the camera at eye level.
The 20Da would be great fun for IR as well, but I'm not sure I'd want to use it for normal shooting. I don't even want to price a 77mm high-pass filter, and where would that leave me when using a lens that is incompatible with front-mount filters, e.g. fisheye lenses?
I also wonder how many dirty buggers will use this for no-good, i.e. "infrared at the beach". Evidence what Sony had to do to their "night shot" mode to avoid this use, and how even that has been circumvented.
Overall, this is a very intriguing addition to the Canon lineup. Kudos to Canon for seeing IR and astrophotography as a valuable market segment.

Agree with Kirbic's last statement. The amateur astronomy market for the 300d/10d/20d has been exceptional and it looks like Canon is responding to that market with this new modification of the 20d.

With Canon making this an option I can't imagine Nikon and the other manufacturers will be far behind. Looks like those companies that were created to mod cameras by removing the hot mirror have their days numbered.

Good job Canon. Although (if dpreview.com forums are right) it is only made to order.
Now we have to see if 20Dbw will be available someday. :)

The standard 20D has a B&W shooting mode.
