Hello all,

I was very happy with the positive feedback I was given on my Bridge II entry (thanks to those who left a comment!). I really liked my entry, and to be honest, slightly disappointed with its placing, and wondered if anyone here could give me some (negative, but constructive) comments on what I could do to improve in this shot. I tried to use as many 'rules' as possible (leading lines, 1/3's etc)...does this result mean that the rules really are there to be broken??

Or do you think it was affected more by the "it's not a real bridge" gang?
Here is my entry:

Thanks,

Dave

I voted it relatively low because it seems haphazardly composed. The image is dominated by an out-of-focus, empty spot lower left. I didn't (and don't) understand why you didn't frame this sp there was more substance at this critical compositional nexus. My scoring of it had nothing to do with it's subject; in fact, I was actively seeking alternative approaches to bridges, with an eye to scoring them as highly as possible.

I think the photograph is pretty decent in its own right. It probably did get marked down in relation to interpretation.

I actually like this alternative "bridge". The only thing that really bothers me is the out of focus lower right corner. My eye keeps getting drawn to it and it bothers me. Otherwise, I think you did a great job of thinking up something outside the box.

I gave it a six, I liked the original take on the challenge theme, and the clean lines. I would have preferred the point of focus being fully in the frame. I also agree about the OOF corner, I wonder if placing the line of focus diagonally from corner to corner would have been more pleasing?

I liked it especially simply being into the piano so it caught my eye i gave it a high rating ..

I scored it a seven, partly because it was a well-made but not spectacular image, partly because I found the interpretation a bit far-fetched: a bridge in guitar-playing is what you do with your fingers, and a non-musician would have a hard time figuring that out from your image.

I suspect that pictures of books/pages/etc are evoking the same response as a picture of Woody does. The image is nice, in it's own right, but this genre of photo seems to appear far too frequently. I suspect that there is a "mundane factor" at work here. Overall, it is an intelligent interpretation but that seldomly seems to influence the the masses. Try lighting that sheet on fire next time! ;-)

Thanks for the comments...its seems that the OOF area is the main reason from your views.

Thanks again,
Dave

I gave it an 8, and that was highly based on creativity. If the subject is an original idea, and catches my eye because its different than the norm, I will try to rate higher based on creative judgement. Again as most people are replying, the blurred corner is way too distracting. If you were to re-shoot that image for your own private collection and capture the whole image in focus, you'd have a winner. Actually, aside from the splotch, this was one of my favorites. The in-focus paper grain makes the photo have a much nicer texture.

Good job regardless.

Pictures of JUST things on paper just fail to appeal to me. I can appreciate the "non-roadway" thinking, but this, to me, just sits right there with the pictures of a dictionary definition with no surrounding context. Your pic in particular would have benefited a lot from a calligraphy pen in "the composer's" hand, or a blurred piano or violin in the background, or perhaps a microphone indicating the presence of a singer.

I think we the addition of some contextual objects or people, even as background, the minor issues of foreground focus or bright spots would be much less impacting.

While I can appreciate your creativity and thinking outside the "box", this image gives the impression that you simply looked for the word "bridge" and shot it, even though I understand that you tried to follow all the compositional rules.

I hope this is helpful and not insulting :)

I gave you a 4.

I didn't vote it down because of it meeting the challenge. I thought it met the challenge well, and in an interesting way. I'd guess some people did vote it lower for that reason though.

I did vote it low because of the shallow DOF causing the annoying out of focus areas and I thought the composition wasn't very interesting with all the blury white space and notes only on the edges of the photo.

I don't recall how I voted this one but I do think it was clever.

I would prefer the shot to be cleaner starting in focus and nearer to the word bridge gradually fading out of focus.

This is far from perfect taken with very low light on the first day EVER with a dslr in hand(so cut it some slack)AND no tripod. Having said that and moving in closer to the musical text, I think this may have been a better angle to have chosen. With the right lighting, perhaps fading across the page with shallow dof you could have created a smokier effect and highlighted the word better. Just my humble opinion. I hope this helps.
