I was taking pictures of reflections in a man made lake when I heard a helicopter and started panning and got a little too close to the sun. Converted the image to BW. What do you think, honestly?

I think adding a separate, larger image of a bird/helicopter/plane would help "make" the photo.

I don't think I understand your suggestion. Are you saying to add another object to the image, say in the lower right, that's bigger than the one in the image? (to give perspective)

I think it works better as Icarus if you adjust levels--the histogram shows almost nothing for 1/4 of the range, close to black.
I adjusted it with two layers, using a circular gradient around the sun. In other words, I leveled it for the cloud area, and once for the sun area, using inverses of the same gradient mask. Then I adjusted levels to taste. I made the sun a bit more extreme in that way.
If I wasn't clear on what I did, I can send you the PS file if you PM me with your email address.

That looks good Neil. I'll have to try your approach. I haven't worked much with gradients.

Similar to Neil's but done without gradients etc. Cntrl-alt-tilde, antrl-J, multiply, then cntrl-alt-tilde, shift-cntrl-I, Cntrl-J, Linear Burn.

Thanks Rob for presenting another option. I'll try both when I get a chance.

Here's another take, I tried to enhance the detail in the clouds, since I think that's one reason this works so well. Curves, curves again, and a USM pass with a radius of 37, amount of about 63 and threshold of 0.

Thanks guys. Now my Dreams entry needs some serious help. A comment from any or all of you would probably have some very good suggestions. ;o)

Does getting the bright sun in the shot hurt the camera?

I wouldn't leave the camera on a tripod, pointed at the sun, but taking a casual shot with the sun in the frame does not cause any harm.

**runs out to remove camera from tripod, pointed at sun**
Thanks!
