...I see images submitted by others here that are larger than mine but their file size is smaller...do people here have a set format they follow? I've downsized them in photoshop and reduced the jpg quality to "8" am I missing something? My images are smaller resolution-wize than most I looked at and still more than 150k. These are my first submissions on this site, any help would be appreciated, many thanks.

Use Photoshop's "Save for Web" feature... you can set a target file size, and PS will adjust the compression to meet it. I recommend always using 640px as the longest side, smaller images take a hit in voting. Also see this tutorial.

Photoshop usually comes with ImageReady as well. ImageReady is quite a nice tool in adjusting for size because it lets you put stuff side by side and it dynamically alters the compression as you change it so you can see the difference. It even has an overlay toggle so you can switch compression on and off to see the picture change.

If you have it installed with photoshop (which I'm assuming is yes because I'm pretty sure it comes with it) you can get to it with the huge button at the bottom of the photoshop tool bar (it will load ImageReady with the image currently in focus in Photoshop).
