this may have been touched on already and may be implimented in some manner on for the new site .. but is there any place in either the photographer's profile or in the voting box to leave seperate things either a comment or critique? or have the photographer say whether he or she wants a comment or critique on his or her photo in the challenge?
I really think some people are getting too technical in leaving critiques when the box says comments ...
my 2 cents

A lot of people don't know the difference between a comment or a critique anyway, and there would always be people leaving them in the wrong box.
I think it's alright just having one box for people to leave whatever they want. A critique, after all, is still really a form of comment.

That is true .. but people are leaving me "comments" when they are really critques - trying to cover all bases ... and i think it's more like getting graded at school ... not having fun with photography ... maybe i only want to get a comment saying whether the person liked the photo and what stood out than technicalities or composition getting a number score. Sometimes things dont need to be that detailed

A very good point.
I thought most people would find this info useful for their future photography, but if you just do it for fun and want know know what people think rather than whats wrong or right with your photo, your initial suggestion makes sense.
It is a good idea :)

So what you are saying that getting better is not your intentions. It is like going on a diet, but not wanting to lose weight or exercizing and not getting more fit. Of course I would like to grow in everything I do. That is all part of life. Learning, growing, becoming wiser! That doesn't include spelling. :)
I want the critiques, please!! Sonja |

If I get a comment/critique that doesn't help me to take better pictures, I just move on to the next one. In your case I suggest thinking of it as the fine print on a contract, incredibly useful but most don't read it anyway. It is just easier to ignore than try to have it removed.

But then again ... critques are nice when you understand them ... for someone to make a critiques and just put composition = 5 for example ... how is that helping me? I am here to learn - but somethings need to just be explained than have a number next to them ... that's what i mean - if someone is going to critique and comment - at least make it worth the time to both the photographer and commenter and make it worth reading ... if you are commenting or critiquing someone on their photograph why cant someone just explain instead of assigning the numbers within the critique - that's what the score is for

I agree with you PhotosByAmye. They should explain more, but then at the same time at least they are telling why they gave you the score they did. It is better then your score going down and not knowing why. That is frustrating. Do you understand what composition means or the other terms used? If not, I would ask them what their definition is for the words. Some people have different opinions on the meanings of the words used in photography. :) Sonja |

Since it isn't practical to write a lot and plus the fact that I am a pretty bad typist, I usually just pick out one or two areas to comment on and say if and why I like it or not. But everyone has there own styles and I think you can learn something from everyone.

Disclaimor -- This is only remotely related to the point Ayme brings up! It just sparked my mind on an issue I had been thinking about, and once my mind and fingers start working together, I have no choice but to go along! Ayme, I promise, this is NOT directed at you!
Back to our regularly scheduled program!
Okay, I am confused. I have been reading the forums since April, and it goes something like this:
--I want more comments --Stupid commenters, don't they know anything --I want more comments, help be get better --Crazy trolls, get a life! --I want more comments --How does this help my photography --I want more comments, what can I do to be better
And now (and I have to say, I have used the comment box for critiques--sorry, never distinguished a difference), some people don't want critiques, only comments, or explanations with numbers, so I am sure there are people that want only critiques not comments and people who only want numbers. :-) What is a poor commenter to do?. Like others on this site, I have tried to offer a layperson's opinion when possible, sometimes helping, sometimes not, I guess.
I guess what I am trying to say is, if you want feedback, it may be in the form of comments, and it may be in the form of critiques. When I look at a picture, I do not know which one you want, so if I give you the opposite, or something useful, consider the source and ignore me! |

it's all good everyone :) ...
i guess in the end i which those who choose to critique in the manner of giving numbers after a technique (composition (which i know what these things mean)) would instead just explain even a part of what they are trying to get across with the numbers ... in my mind if someone gives that type of critique: example composition = 5 .. to me that's just middle of the road nothing special but nothing wrong ... but to the critiquer it could mean something completely different ... and in the end that doesnt really teach me anything ... so ... because i DO ENJOY GETTING COMMENTS ... i guess for now i'll just put those aside and learn from those who have made more time to comment and critique and actually explain themselves :)

I take what I can use, and am happy for that; I throw out what doesn't make sense, or doesn't help me in any way; and I move on. I think most people make the assumption that "comments" and "critiques" go hand in hand, and indeed, can be one and the same when rating photos in this environment.

I, personally, think that "5" is pretty self explanatory - and you said it perfectly: ..just middle of the road, nothing special, but nothing wrong. I feel that I can pretty much judge, by the numbers, the general impact my image had on someone, and no further explanation is needed.

How about not leaving comments if you don't have anything useful/nice to say? If I don't like a picture (and I don't feel like explaining why), I rate it and that's it. My note is my comment.
It serves no purposes to leave a "I don't like it" or "boring..." comment without saying WHY you don't like it or WHY it's boring.
Same thing for somebody leaving a "no!!" or a "ew...".. It's useless. I don't even know what they mean by it, like "NO I don't like it", "NO it doesn't fit the challenge" or "NO I don't have half a brain"...

I have to agree with you. However, I think we all know that there are peeps out there that are just not going to leave you anything useful. It's just a sad fact.
