I entered in a picture for dutones and recieved some comments that suggest that the picture would've been better if a specific object hadn't been present. Sorry to be vague but I don't want to point out which of the photographs is mine. I feel that I framed the picture well, but the object is within that frame so I can't zoom in and crop that unwanted object out. My question is this: Without breaking the rules is there a way to cut out certain things within a photograph without cropping or the clone tool?

The only editing allowed has to be done to the entire image. I know that some people jack up the contrast way high and it deletes some things from the image, but I don't think it works well in most cases. Especially if you want to keep the detail of the main object.
Not quite sure there is a DPC legal way to edit out a particular object in a photo. Cropping would be the only suggestion I could make. But if that's not possible, then I think you're stuck.

Sometimes it depends on the subject, composition, and how far you're willing to go.

The unedited version of my Blue Roses photo had corners cluttered with background elements and people. I decided to help that in the final version by partially covering the undesirable elements with a vignetted overlay border, which is (usually) achievable through DPC-legal means.

To GeneralE:
it makes for an awesome picture and I would like to know how you did it in some detail (I still use PS 5.5). It looks as if it cannot be done within the rules of DPC.

I made a similar comment to this on a picture - I have no idea if it was yours. In the instance where I made the comment I don't believe that there was anything that could be done to fix it within the constraints of the rules, it was just a well shot picture that something in the background detracted from. It was nobody's fault but it just caused the picture to be less impressive than it otherwise would have been. The only way to have improved that particular one would have been to shoot again when the distracting feature was absent - with no guarantees that the main shot would have worked as well. Photography IS partially luck and opportunism, not simply skill.
