I really don't get it. 2 comments and not 1 single critique about my actual photography!!! what is so wrong with it that people are giving me 3s and under, but no comment as to why???????

I've started (but not finished) a first pass at voting. I usually do not add comments until I go back thru at least the higher and lower scores a second time.
So I may have given you a 3 -- or a 7 or 8 and eventually I'd let you know why.
PS. if you never hear from me -- I've voted you in the middle of the pack -- at least that's the story I'm stickin to.

well this is now my second challenge and have had a couple of comments some more useful then others but it's early in the game and people will go back and change their votes after a second and or third swing through the entries sobe patient and do what you do best take pictures.
my problem is my lifestyle can get busy so i wait till the 11th hour to get my entry in not giving myself the time to get that awesome shot so next time i want to be prepared.

I sympathize with you - been watching mine dwindle too, so don't feel alone.
Last 30 or so votes knocked it out of 7 range.
Now if I can just hold on to my mid 6, I will be elated - this was a personal challenge, as I stated in my comments section. |

My photo started @ 10 on its 1st vote, dropped over night to 5.8 and bounced a little this afternoon to 6+. But, at least according to the comments, it's playing to what they call "critical acclaim!" lol

Because the numbers are relative and an artificial measure, especially outside of context.
I like to watch the numbers like anyone else, but its the final placement and comments that really means a lot to me. I've found that my pictures usually score relatively close to where they should in the stack. This time around my photo was decent, and two years ago would probably be at least in the 5.5 range. But this time around there are so many photos so much better than mine that I can see why it's slipping.
Also things aren't done yet. For example I just finished my last 10 pictures and am now going through and fixing my groupings. I bumped several pictures and dropped a few (sorry).
My particular method is that I try to group pictures of "similar quality" together under each number. I get a pretty normal bell curve doing it this way. Lots of 5's, and 6's. Moderate numbers of 4's and 7's. A scattering of 3's and 8's and a few 1s, 2s, 9s and 10s.
In the end look at the pictures around yours. Most of the time I find mine is pretty close to where it should be. It also depends on whether we get a lot of great photos or whether we get a lot of crappy ones. When competition is strong, as it is in this challenge, then expect a lower score. And don't forget that originality can make or break you in a large turnout. So if your picture is technically perfect but the subject evokes "eh, who cares?" then you'll also score lower.

I'm just mad at myself because I had a technically better overall picture, that would have scored better with the masses, but I entered this one because it's more "artsy". Guess i've been looking at photoblogs.org too much.

Ha, I so want to start a thread stating I am not a sick, twisted freak. Apparently my entry is evoking a few feelings of unease, but they are understanding the picture wrong. My score has dropped from a 6.29 to a 6.07 in the last two hours on what are probably at least two 3- scores from people who were freaked out.
Oh well, c'est la vie. I guess I should look harder at the possible interpretations... |

This is my 5th challenge (3 completed and 2 in voting). Of the 5, this is by far the most difficult time I've had ranking photos. I'm not sure if it's just the volume of pics, or my personal lack of confidence in perspective shots, but I'm really struggling.
I have a new take on the 80 / 20 rule ... I've just hit 20% ranked but my headache is 80% worse!
Anyone else feeling the pain? |

Not really I guess. I've been an architecture fan since I was 7 though. Thats not to say that I don't like the pictures without buildings in them.
I've rated 61% so far, and commented 51 times. I'm just glad that I'm not trying to do this and a member challenge vote.

I've been swinging all over the place between 5.0 and 6.0. It's going to be interesting to see the spread of votes on this one -- people either vote me very high, or very low. I think I'm taking quite a few hits from people working from a very specific definition of perspective and calling me "off topic" and giving me punishment votes. Others seem to love it. 2 favorites so far.
I expected as much though, with the off-topic comments. I'm happy either way. It's above my average which is the only goal I have for every challenge I enter. :)
Gentle reminder of the varying definitions of perspective The challenge description didn't seem to specify, imo. |
