Hi,
I've got a suggestion after realizing that I have missed some comments left by others on my photos (challenge and portfolio). It usually happens especially to older submissions or older photos in the portfolio. I realized I've got unread comments while browsing through all my received comments (8 pages of it, thanks guys!)
So can I suggest (if it's not asking too much)
that an ALERT will be shown somewhere (maybe top-left corner near the UPDATE button) whenever we receive new comment on any of our photos?
Now that I think about it, maybe an extra checkbox for us to check for comments that we have read. This also serves another purpose, at least the commentor know the comment is read (whether it is marked helpful or not)
UPDATE: whenever an existing comment is EDITED or UPDATED, we will be notified just as well (so we can mark it Helpful this time if it wasn't, or at least realize the comments were updated)
I think these additions to the site will encourage more quality comments
what do you think?

Some questions:
How long is the new comment 'new'? For the first session that it shows up for? Do we need a mechanism to identify that the new comment has been seen?
Another option is to send an email when a new comment is received. Have a preference to turn this on/off so those who don't want emails won't get them.
BTW, not knocking the idea, just trying to flesh it out a bit. |

Excellent idea. It often takes me months to notice non-challenge or post-challenge comments. It'd be a pain to get a bunch of e-mails, but if something could pop up on the homepage that would be awesome.
A also love the idea of a comment read checkbox. |

On the left side of your profile page, you can click on "Recent comments" to see all comments left recently. I check it every day so I don't forget to say thanks.

oh I also just remembered I left out something from the suggestion:
whenever an existing comment is EDITED or UPDATED, we will be notified just as well (so we can mark it Helpful this time if it wasn't, or at least realize the comments were updated)
I think these additions to the site will encourage more quality comments, what do you think? |

yeah, but I just thought it should be enhanced as to encourage more quality comments. Also, does that "recent comments" thing tells us if someone updated his existing comments? thanks |

Hmmm. I don't see that anywhere. I see "received comments" and they're listed in reverse chronological order, but I don't see "recent". |

You can re-sort it to show recent ones on top.
However, using your case as an example, I really think it's too hidden away and with the Alert system, it would be more useful and comments wont be missed. |

How about if there was a check box for 'comment read'? The the 'new' comment could be 'new' until that box had been ticked.
I think this whole idea is a cracker!

I really like the idea of a notification for new comments. So, what happens to a suggestion like this? Is there a list somewhere, or do they just fade away and die.
I think an e-mail notification would work well with these conditions:
1. No e-mail notification for comments left on a photo that is currently being voted on.
2. Comments made on photos after voting, or in a portfolio, would generate an e-mail with links to the photo.
3. The e-mail would only be sent once a week. |

I love this idea, I frequent another site that has this feature... it has a tracker on the side of the page that shows:
1. how many people are currently on the site
2. how many of your "friends" are online
3. how many new critiques/replies you have
If you click on the critiques/replies link, it takes you directly to the new comments, after you have read them, the number reverts to zero.. I think its a great tool!
If you would like to see it first hand, I can give you the name of the site to check it out

I too have missed comments, and this is definetly a great idea.
It is hard to go through the existing work, and to see if anyone else has left any comments behind. This idea should take care of that.

We notice. We might not always post in here, but they do get read and considered. Lang is an amazing man when it comes to surprising us sometimes. It all depends on ease and importance really. But Lang has a HUGE list of things ya'll want to see happen. Someday... |
