Choi,
IMHO, the best bang for the buck would be the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
//consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=149&modelid=11924
A lower cost solution is the EF-S 17-85MM f4-5.6 IS USM
//consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=149&modelid=10511
They both have IS to assist during candids.

For portraits, the best money can buy portrait lens would be a Canon 85mm f/1.2L or Canon 24-70 f/2.8L, midrange is the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 and budget is the Canon 50mm f/1.8. Happy shopping. |

"Portrait lens" covers a lot of ground! Traditionally, though, portrait lenses have been in the range of 85mm or so. On an APS-C (1.6-crop) camera, though, a 50mm lens will give you a FoV equivalent to 80mm on a 35mm camera.
That may make your decision pretty easy. Start with either the 50/1.8 or the 50/1.4 primes. the 50/1.8 is very plasticky in build, but is less than $100USD. The 1.4 version has USM, is better (but not really WELL) built, and is of course a little faster, but costs just north of $300USD. It also has superior bokeh, something that may be of importance to you if shallow-DoF portait work is your thing.

Get a 50mm F1.4 M42 mount Super Takumar on Ebay for $30-50 and then another $10 for a M42 to EOS adapter. It'll be manual focus though. Great for portraits.
If you need auto focus get the Canon 50mm F1.8. Great for portraits but soft in the corners.
If you're looking for a telephoto, the Sigma 70-300 APO DG is a really nice lens for $200. not perfect by any means, but better then other lens in this range that cost more.

It is a little soft in the corners, but for portraits, this really isn't a major factor. Most portraits don't fill the frame with subject and you want the background OOF anyway, so the soft corners don't really matter.
Price vs. Performance the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II is VERY hard to beat for portrait work.

Is this lens a better buy than say... the Sigma 24-60 EX DG?
Would anybody reccomend the Canon? |
