Hi guys!
I got a 350XT and 400 f/5.6L and to be honest.. im not that impressed with the autofocus of the XT. Like so many others ive bought a Tamron 1.4x Teleconverter (cheap non-pro one) to go with the combo. And even tho its not a recomended combo its still a very good one for most people.
I dont have the same luck.. so im starting to wounder if the 30D would give me better autofocus then the 350XT?

I think i want to upgrade anyways since i feel that 350XT has to much toyfeeling over it. And i wanted the 20D all the time before getting 350XT but didnt have the money at that time.
So here i am with some more money now.. And the 30D is looking hot =)

Anyways.. Anyone has experience with 30D + 400 5.6L + tamron 1.4 tc?

I don't think any camera body out there will autofocus at all, let alone good with a 400 f/5.6 and a 1.4 TC...I think 5.6 is the limit, and even at that, you're pushing the autofocus capabilities of any camera.

Hi =)
Well it autofocuses pretty well and alot of ppl have great results with this combo. But i do wounder if there will be an improvment with this combo when going from 350XT to 30D?

Better cameras will AF at F/8 which is what this combo is effectively at, at least with the Canon 1.4x converter. Not sure if that applies to the Tamron as well, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

How well it autofocuses is up for grabs though.

To answer my own question. I got my 30D today, and WOW! What a difference! I can use my 30D plus 1.4x TC shooting birds in flight without problem now! It hunts a liiittle maybee once every 10th shoot but dont fail me on getting a lock on target with the autofocus!
Man this was a good buy :)

Very interesting, shows how the AF systems are improving! In theory, this combination is beyond the capability of all but the 1-series bodies, which are rated to AF at f/8. All other Canon bodies are rated to f/5.6.
Don't try this with the Canon converter, or some higher-end 3rd party converters, since they will accurately report the f-stop, and the camera will refuse to try to AF.
